Miguel died on October 20, 2026, at a private hospital in Goiana, Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, where he had been receiving treatment for bronchiolitis.

The infant was admitted to the hospital on October 11 after developing the respiratory infection, which affects the small airways in the lungs.

According to his family, Miguel had shown signs of improvement and was awaiting further medical assessments to determine whether he was ready to be discharged.

His aunt, Meyre Gabriela da Silva, was staying with him at the hospital because his mother was recovering from an appendix procedure.

The family said the incident happened at around 4 a.m. on October 20, when Meyre briefly left the room to use the bathroom.

When she returned, she reportedly found the baby in distress. Miguel was crying, his skin had turned purple, and he was making unusual sounds. His mouth had also changed colour.

Meyre immediately called for medical staff to attend to him. During the incident, she reportedly noticed that the baby’s milk supply had been connected to an intravenous line instead of the feeding tube inserted through his nose.

she said: “I covered him again because it was cold and then he started crying, made a strange sound and turned completely purple.

“He began to lose consciousness and his mouth turned grey.

“I immediately called for help and, when I turned on the light, I saw the intravenous line connected incorrectly.”

Despite efforts by medical personnel to save him, Miguel died after an hour of trying to save his life.

The family is demanding accountability and alleges that the healthcare worker involved acknowledged connecting the milk to the wrong line.

The Pernambuco Civil Police registered the case as a homicide on October 21. Investigators are expected to establish exactly what happened and determine the cause of the baby’s death.

The hospital said the employee involved had been suspended while its patient-safety team investigated the incident. It also expressed condolences to Miguel’s family and pledged to cooperate with the authorities.

Miguel’s body was taken for a forensic examination before being released to his relatives. He was buried on October 22.
