Participants assembled at the university’s main gate before embarking on a solemn candlelight procession to ISDEVCOM, where the memorial programme was held.
Among the dignitaries present were the institute’s pioneer director, Professor Emmanuel Samu Dandaura, and Nollywood veteran Hajia Lantana Ahmed, alongside other notable guests.
During the programme, the ISDEVCOM postgraduate coordinator and former Chaplain of the Chapel of Salvation, NSUK, Professor Abraham David, urged attendees to reflect on the reality of death and the importance of living meaningful lives.
He highlighted forgiveness, persistent prayer and maintaining a peaceful relationship with the Creator as important lessons to remember following Duru’s passing.
Speaking on behalf of the university community, Professor Charles Amende said the late actor’s inspiring performances had motivated many young people within the institution and would continue to influence future generations.
A childhood schoolmate and longtime friend also paid tribute, remembering Duru as a loyal friend who was passionate about discovering and supporting young creative talents.
The memorial featured emotional accounts from students and relatives whose lives had been touched by the late actor.
One of the students, identified as Dorcas, broke down in tears as she described Duru as a father figure who was always willing to offer guidance and support.
She also disclosed that she had been preparing to organise a creative event where the actor was expected to speak before his death.
Representing the bereaved family, his son, Ebuka Duru, spoke about the family’s pain, saying his father’s death had left a huge void they were still struggling to understand.
The programme ended with attendees lighting candles in remembrance of the late actor, symbolising the impact of his life on Nigeria’s entertainment and academic communities.
Duru’s death has also attracted tributes from prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who acknowledged his contributions to the country’s creative industry.
For the Nasarawa State University community, the memorial provided an opportunity to celebrate his achievements, reflect on his influence and honour the memory of a man whose loss will be deeply felt by his family, colleagues, students and the wider entertainment industry.
