Woman gives birth on plane while traveling from Senegal to Rome

A remarkable moment unfolded aboard an ITA Airways flight when a woman gave birth mid-air during a journey from Dakar to Rome.

The incident occurred on flight AZ855, where both crew members and passengers quickly stepped in to assist after it became clear that a seven-month pregnant woman was going into labor.

According to reports, the situation developed about an hour after takeoff, prompting an urgent response from the cabin crew. The expectant mother was immediately moved to a more private area of the aircraft, while an announcement was made asking if any medical professionals were on board.

Fortunately, a doctor and a nurse were among the passengers and stepped forward to help with the delivery.

Following the safe birth, the airline shared the news on social media, describing it as a rare and special moment. In its statement, the airline wrote: “A pleasant and unexpected event made ITA Airways’ day.

“On flight AZ855 that departed from Dakar last night and headed to Rome Fiumicino, an hour after take-off a seven-month pregnant woman gave birth to a baby prematurely.

“The mother and the baby received immediate assistance from the crew, who demonstrated great professionalism, and two passengers, a doctor and a nurse, to whom the company deserves the most sincere thanks.

“The baby, in perfect health, is the first baby born on board an aircraft in ITA Airways history, wishing the baby a wonderful life full of joy”
