Professional wrestler, Fabio Caruso left paralyzed after suffering from Mosquito bite

Former Wrestling professional champion Fabio Caruso has been left paralyzed after being infected with the West Nile virus from a mosquito bite.  

The incident occurred in September last year while Fabio was working in his yard in Whitestone, New York. At the time, he was recovering from a kidney transplant, which had suppressed his immune system, allowing the virus to spread throughout his body and cause a severe infection.  

As his condition worsened, Caruso was admitted to the intensive care unit at NYU Langone, suffering from respiratory failure and lower body paralysis. He was unable to breathe on his own and had to be placed on a ventilator to survive.  

After spending 10 months in the hospital, Fabio was stable enough to be transferred to the New Gouverneur Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, where he underwent an intensive six-month rehabilitation program.  

Reflecting on his experience, Fabio said, “When I arrived at Gouverneur, I was still in a lot of pain and questioning why this was happening to me. I was discouraged and didn’t care about getting better.”
