Missing 79-Year-Old Fisherman Rescued Alive After Spending 9 Days in the Wilderness

A 79-year-old fisherman has been rescued after surviving nine days lost in the wilderness on Russia’s Sakhalin Island.

According to reports, the elderly man had gone missing before search efforts led rescuers to a remote area near the village of Pilvo.

The search gained momentum after authorities located the man’s abandoned vehicle in the village. Volunteers later found him on the left bank of the Pilevka River, approximately half a mile from where the car had been discovered.

Rescuers said the fisherman was still alive when they reached him but was severely exhausted after spending several days trying to find his way out of the dense forest.

Emergency workers reportedly carried the elderly man across difficult terrain to safety before he was taken for medical attention. He is believed to be recovering from the ordeal.

Sakhalin, Russia’s largest island, is located off the country’s eastern coast near Japan. The island stretches approximately 589 miles (948 km) in length and 100 miles (160 km) at its widest point and is home to an estimated population of about 500,000 people.
