Richard Madeley visits El Salvador’s notorious mega prison where Notorious criminals are held
TV presenter Richard Madeley has appeared in a new Channel 5 documentary exploring El Salvador’s highly controversial mega prison, the Terrorism Confinement Center known as Cecot, widely regarded as one of the strictest prisons in the world.

The programme, Inside the World’s Mega Prison, sees the Good Morning Britain star gain rare access to the facility in Tecoluca, which has become the centrepiece of President Nayib Bukele’s aggressive crackdown on gang violence.
During his visit, Madeley observed the tightly controlled environment, where prisoners spend 23 and a half hours a day inside their cells with minimal movement, limited communication, and no recreational facilities.

He later suggested that while the system is harsh, it may offer lessons for countries like the UK struggling with prison overcrowding and reform challenges.
“I think Cecot is probably a unique, brutally bespoke solution to the horrors that plagued ordinary Salvadorans for so long,” Madeley said. “But I do believe there are lessons we can learn.”
He added that prison systems depend on clear decisions about security, punishment, and deterrence, arguing that consistency is key in achieving results.
As part of the documentary, Madeley also interviewed an inmate referred to as “Psycho,” who reportedly admitted to involvement in multiple killings and gang activity.

The prisoner described a life of violence and regret, saying he believed there was no future outside prison.
“This is the end of everything,” the inmate said, explaining that he expected to remain incarcerated for life under the country’s strict policies.
He also reflected on his past, including exposure to violence during childhood, saying revenge and survival shaped his path into gang life.

The documentary highlighted El Salvador’s broader crackdown on gangs, which has seen tens of thousands arrested since 2022 under emergency security measures. Officials claim the policy has significantly reduced homicide rates.
Madeley also experienced the strict communication rules inside the prison, where even language barriers were tightly controlled by guards during interviews.
At several points during filming, production was briefly interrupted when officials challenged questions about prison conditions and restricted further access.

Despite the harsh environment, Madeley described the experience as deeply unsettling, particularly after witnessing inmates confined in extreme conditions with minimal human interaction.
He later reflected that one inmate appeared like a “dead man walking,” describing the emotional weight of the encounter.
The documentary also showed daily life inside Cecot, including basic meals of beans, rice, and tortillas served directly into cells, with inmates using their hands due to a lack of cutlery.

The prison, built to hold up to 40,000 inmates, currently houses around 15,000 and has become a symbol of President Bukele’s anti-gang strategy.
While supporters of the policy credit it with reducing crime dramatically, critics continue to raise concerns about human rights, indefinite detention, and the absence of rehabilitation programmes.

The programme has sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising its hard-hitting journalism while others criticized its tone and comparisons to other documentary styles.

The Cecot prison remains one of the most debated correctional facilities in the world, reflecting the ongoing tension between security and human rights in El Salvador’s justice system.

15-Year-Old Boy Sentenced to 100 Years in Prison, Friend Gets 125 Years Over Gang-Related Shooting That Killed a Woman

The teenager, Jo’Majze Larry, of Anderson, Indiana, received the sentence on Wednesday during a hearing before Judge David Happe of the Circuit Court of Madison County.

Authorities said the incident occurred in February 2025 outside a nightclub in Anderson, a suburb of Indianapolis.
Investigators alleged that Swain was not the intended target but was instead killed during a failed attempt to murder a witness connected to another homicide.
Larry and his co-defendant, Rashawn Samuels, 19, were found guilty by a jury on June 30 after standing trial together.
During a separate court hearing on Thursday, Judge Happe sentenced Samuels to 125 years in prison.

Both defendants admitted to an additional charge of participating in a criminal organization.
Larry received 50 years for the murder of Dayla Swain and an additional 50 years for the criminal organization enhancement, bringing his total sentence to 100 years.
Samuels was sentenced to 62½ years for the murder conviction and another 62½ years for the gang enhancement, resulting in a total sentence of 125 years.
Commenting on the case, prosecutors stated:
“Indiana law recognizes that criminal organizations can pose a greater threat to public safety because they coordinate criminal activity, recruit others to participate in crime, and often commit offenses for financial gain or to further the goals of the organization,”
Another defendant, Kyree Craver, 19, was convicted in a separate trial earlier this year for Swain’s murder and was sentenced by Judge Happe on July 9 to 90 years in prison.
A fourth defendant is expected to stand trial later this year.
In addition to murder, Larry and Samuels were also convicted of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Because Larry was under the age of 18 when the crime occurred and according to Indiana law, It allows him to apply for a judicial review of his sentence after serving at least 20 years, without requiring the consent of the prosecuting attorney.
Prosecutors said the fatal shooting was connected to the 2023 murder of 15-year-old Jullian Craig, who was killed during an attempted armed robbery.
Authorities alleged that Craig’s death motivated Larry, Samuels, and other alleged gang members to plot the killing of a witness connected to that case.
The planned attack took place outside Sonny Ray’s Nightclub in Anderson on February 2, 2025, but investigators said the intended target survived while Dayla Swain, who was not involved, was fatally shot.
