Woman Cries Out, Set to Sue NHS After Being Kept on Chemotherapy for 6 Years and Half Years
A devastated mom named Samantha Smith is taking the NHS to court after she claims she was given way too much chemotherapy following her brain tumor diagnosis back in 2014.
Samantha, now 45, says doctors told her she needed immediate surgery, and afterward, she went through radiotherapy and a long stretch of chemo while being treated at University Hospital Coventry. The problem? Guidelines recommend patients only get the drug for about six months, but Samantha was kept on it for a staggering six years and six months.

She explained that her consultant oncologist, Professor Ian Brown, finally told her to stop the treatment right after he retired—even though she’d been on it for so long. Now, Professor Brown is facing an investigation by the General Medical Council.
Feeling betrayed, Samantha has brought in lawyers to dig into her care, worried that others might have gone through the same unnecessary ordeal. On top of that, she hasn’t been able to work since learning about her condition, and she’s dealt with brutal side effects like constant fatigue, infections, and even rotten teeth.
In her own words: “Undergoing chemotherapy is a gruelling process and I’ve been very unwell for the best part of a decade. But I told myself it was all worth it to get better. So to find out that around six-and-a-half years of my treatment wasn’t needed came as a huge shock.
“I feel like that part of my life has been stolen from me, as I spent so long unable to function properly and just getting by day-to-day. I also had the burden of getting myself to monthly blood tests, collecting my tablets and keeping myself protected during the pandemic, which wasn’t easy when I felt as ill as I did.
“I can’t move my right side leg upwards and can’t move my shoulder.
“All I want to do now is get some answers and help make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
When Samantha was first diagnosed in 2014, surgeons couldn’t remove all of the tumor. She had regular MRI scans over the years, and it wasn’t until 2021—seven years later—that she was told her condition was stable and she could finally ditch the meds.
But it was only after Professor Brown’s retirement that the truth came out: she’d been through six and a half years of chemo that wasn’t needed.
The University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, which employed Professor Brown, is now doing an internal review into the whole mess and why the medication was dragged out for so long. They’ve reached out to Samantha and her family, saying they’re “very sorry for the excessive treatment” and the toll it’s taken on her.
In their letter, the trust admitted that the long course of chemo didn’t follow national guidelines and “not supported by scientific evidence.” They’ve also put new steps in place to stop it from happening again, like capping the medication at six or 12 cycles, and getting extra checks from a doctor, nurse, and pharmacist to lock in the diagnosis and plan right from the start.

She said she turned down the offer and tried to walk away, but the stranger continued following her, insisting that an Alhaji was ready to pay N1.5 million for the baby.
Amaka said she became frightened when the man allegedly threatened that she would sell the child “by fire or by force.”
Amaka said the suspect attempted to flee after realising that she had informed others about his actions. His attempt to escape reportedly attracted the attention of other men and youths at a nearby food spot, who helped apprehend him before the police arrived.
Recounting the incident, Amaka wrote:
“I was on my way to school this morning, I didn’t want to go early but we prepared early cause hubby was around.
Only for me to get to the street of my work place and this man in this picture approached me, asking IF I WANTED TO SELL MY UNBORN CHILD I was honestly surprised and told him no and increased my pace but he kept following me telling me Alhaji will pay 1.5m for my innocent pikin. I didn’t even respond to him (I kept calling my hubby and it was saying not reachable and it will be a bad idea for me to go home cause he will definitely follow me) but he followed me to almost my school and made a statement “You go sell by fire or by force”
That’s when I went to the woman who sells food and narrated everything, she quickly called her hubby who is a vigilantee (I pretend like I was buying food and told her everything) he came with 2 boys and was discussing with his wife like he doesn’t know her.
I guess he sensed that I’ve told them and wanted to run, the man raised an alarm and some men and young boys who were eating in mama akara spot came out, that was how he was caught oh, they beat him till police came and took him away. My body have been shaking since morning.
(He was talking to some school children since I refused to answer him, i had to slow down and told them to go to the front that was how I was able to take this picture)
Please let’s be careful out there 🙏
He said he came from keffi yesterday night

When officers arrived, they found the newborn inside the closet, wrapped in a trash bag. The baby was cold to the touch.
According to a statement from Lexington police, the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the infant had been born alive and died from asphyxiation.
During the court proceedings, Judge Diane Minnifield asked Snelling how she had ended the infant’s life. She responded, “I deprived him of oxygen.”

Snelling became emotional as she addressed the court, explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“I was under a lot of emotional stress and my baby came unexpectedly.
“And instead of helping him, I ended his life and afterward I cleaned up and didn’t tell anyone.”
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Snelling pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.
Following her arrest, Snelling reportedly told investigators that she remained awake for about 30 minutes after giving birth before passing out on top of the baby.
Court documents stated that when she regained consciousness, she noticed the infant was “turning blue and purple.”

Investigators also discovered that Snelling had deleted photographs of her labour from her phone, along with other evidence relating to her pregnancy, according to court documents.

The suspect, identified as Jonathan Gatto, is facing charges over the death of his 41-year-old wife, Julia Pederson, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
In addition to murder, Gatto is facing other charges, including arson-related offences, tampering with evidence, endangering the welfare of a child and abuse of a corpse.

Investigators later determined that the fire had been deliberately started in a downstairs bedroom. An affidavit of probable cause stated that blood testing established Julia was already dead before the fire began, while an autopsy revealed that she had been strangled.

During questioning, Gatto reportedly told investigators that his marriage to Julia had been troubled and that they had been discussing how to tell their daughter about their plans to separate.
He also claimed that Julia returned home from work the previous day feeling unwell and had taken medication for her migraines.
According to the affidavit, Gatto told investigators that he later heard noises coming from upstairs, including what he described as someone trembling down the stairs. He said he went to the landing overlooking the basement but did not see anyone.

He further claimed that he asked Julia if she was okay after hearing her mumble something, before hearing her bedroom door close.
Gatto also told investigators that he woke up at around 2 a.m. to offer his wife medication, but she declined.
He reportedly claimed that smoke alarms later woke him up, prompting him to rush upstairs to rescue their daughter before calling 911.
He reportedly claimed that smoke alarms later woke him up, prompting him to rush upstairs to rescue their daughter before calling 911.
According to his account, he then attempted to return inside to save Julia but burnt his hand while reaching through a bedroom door and was forced to retreat.
The couple’s seven-year-old daughter was reportedly asleep upstairs when the alleged killing took place.
Meanwhile, Julia’s sister, Abbey, has organised a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses and establish a scholarship fund for her niece.
In the appeal, the family described Julia as a beloved friend, daughter, sister, wife and mother whose death had left a deep void in the lives of those who knew her.
The statement also expressed gratitude for the support received from relatives, friends, colleagues and members of the community during the difficult period.
Julia was a dedicated paediatrician who was certified in general paediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. She graduated from Harvard University before earning her medical degree from Stanford School of Medicine.
She subsequently completed her paediatric residency at Northwestern’s Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, dedicating her career to caring for children and supporting their families.
Beyond her medical career, Julia enjoyed exploring nature preserves, reading and learning to crochet. She lived in Harrisburg with her family and was remembered by her loved ones for much more than her professional achievements.
The fundraiser’s statement also highlighted the loss her daughter has suffered, noting that the young girl is in second grade.
The family said they hoped to surround Julia’s daughter with the same compassion and care that Julia had shown to others throughout her life.
At the time of writing, the fundraiser had raised $26,036, equivalent to approximately £19,532, to support the family and help secure the young girl’s future.
