Mother Sentenced to 9 Years for Murdering Her Three-Month-Old Daughter
A 24-year-old mother, Nazli Merthoca, has been sentenced to nine years and six months in prison for killing her three-month-old daughter, Kaylani Kalanzi.
Kaylani was born prematurely and spent 29 days in hospital before being discharged on May 13, 2024. Due to concerns raised at the time, the baby was placed under a child protection plan when she returned home.
Prosecutor Zoe Johnson KC told the court that Merthoca was in a mutually abusive relationship with Kaylani’s father, Herbert Kalanzi, when the baby was released from hospital. Despite concerns, social services had initially agreed the parents could care for Kaylani after Kalanzi committed to attending a fatherhood programme.
However, the prosecution said this plan ultimately failed.
On July 8, 2024, emergency services were called at around 10:30pm after the couple reported that their baby had stopped breathing. Paramedics attended Merthoca’s grandmother’s flat in Homerton, east London, where the family was staying at the time.
The court heard that Merthoca failed to tell paramedics that Kaylani had been violently shaken, leading to bleeding in her brain, damage to her eyes, and multiple fractures, including her tibia and ribs.
Kaylani was admitted to hospital with catastrophic brain injuries and died 15 days later.
Hospital staff later reported that Merthoca became distressed when questioned and claimed she was being blamed because of her “race and gender”, according to evidence heard at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Ms Johnson told the court that Merthoca had “lost her temper with the baby after an accumulation of factors” and had “challenged” social workers rather than accepting support.
Defending Merthoca, Benjamin Aina KC said his client had experienced “a number of significant challenges” throughout her life. These included suffering physical abuse as a child, entering the care system at the age of 12, being “groomed by older men”, and developing reliance on cannabis and alcohol. He also spoke about her “grief” following Kaylani’s death.
Merthoca stood trial in October, where a jury cleared her of murder but found her guilty of manslaughter.
During sentencing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC described Kaylani’s death as the “loss of a precious life”.
“The impact of the death of Kaylani will be felt by many,” he said.
“You will have to live with the knowledge that you killed your daughter.”
Kaylani’s father, Herbert Kalanzi, had also been on trial accused of causing or allowing her death but was cleared by the jury. He had earlier been formally acquitted of murder on the judge’s direction.
Both defendants, from East Ham, east London, chose not to give evidence during the trial.

“A database gave us an idea of where to look but then it was up to us to go and see.
“The item in question could have been demolished so it’s all luck of the draw.
“But it’s all part of the research.”
Stuart added that the bunker is located on private land and believes the landowner is likely aware of its existence.
“It’s on private land so I’d expect the farmer knows it’s there.”
The discovery has fascinated history enthusiasts online, offering a rare glimpse into a wartime structure that has remained hidden for decades.

Couples Arrested After Climbing Empire State Building Antenna for Marriage Proposal
The pair, who were dressed in black, were seen scaling the building’s antenna without safety harnesses before standing on a narrow ledge near the summit, approximately 443 metres (1,454 feet) above Manhattan.

The daring stunt drew the attention of authorities, and shortly after the climbers descended from the antenna at around 1 p.m., officers moved in and arrested them.
According to reports, the two individuals are believed to be Russian nationals.
Confirming the incident, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department told AFP:
“Two individuals were taken into custody without incident. There are no injuries reported. Charges are pending, and the investigation is still ongoing.”
No injuries were reported during the incident, and authorities are continuing their investigation.

A Ghanaian woman has reportedly been hospitalized after collapsing upon discovering that her husband had allegedly married another woman without her knowledge.
The incident was shared on Facebook by a man identified as Fati Aboni, who said the woman is currently receiving treatment at a hospital. According to him, the incident occurred on Friday, June 26.
