I’m 44, and People Say I Should Have a Husband and Kids—Some Even Mock Me for Enrolling in University at My Age

A 44-year-old woman, Zeta Yarwood has shared her joy and contentment about living a child-free life.  

In a post, she revealed that she has been child-free for years and self-employed for 10years. Instead of focusing on starting a family, she decided to pursue her education and further more in the University.

Despite her achievements, she admitted facing criticism from some people, who mocked her and even labeled her as “crazy” for choosing this path, especially at her age, while many of her peers are settling down with families.  

She wrote: “I’m 44 today.
Society might have me believe I “should” be on a clear path by now.

Husband. Kids. A high-flying career in the corporate world.

I’m single. Don’t want kids. Been a self-employed coach for 10 years. Never really been one to conform!

But recently I haven’t been as brave.

I’ve known for a while I craved change. But fears of business impact and loss of income have kept me playing “safe”.

But if the challenges of the last two years (parental cancer, while managing a relocation and business) have reminded me anything it’s this:

There’s a difference between existing and truly living.

As 2024 comes to a close, I’m saying goodbye to the fears of what I might lose.

And being excited about what I will gain.

So, this is me. At 44. Going back to university.

To learn more about global issues; the narratives, and systemic and political powers at play.

To deepen my understanding of leadership and personal accountability at a global level, not only a corporate one.

Some have said I’m crazy. Doing this at my age, after everything I’ve worked so hard to build. With no clear path or understanding of how to “monetise” what I will learn.

But life isn’t always about money. Being true to ourselves is where real fulfilment lies.

My heart is calling for a change. And the only person who can create that change is me.

It’s a risk. Nobody is paying my bills but me.

But with life as short and unpredictable as it is, it’s a risk I’m willing to take.
