Joy, a former cashier at a local supermarket in Kisumu, Kenya, has shared her incredible journey of meeting and marrying a man from the Czech Republic.

Back in 2018, Joy was working at the supermarket when she encountered Tom, who was visiting Kisumu for a vacation.

As Tom queued with other customers to make his purchases, he witnessed a customer ahead of him struggling to pay. In a generous act, Tom decided to cover the cost of the customer’s items. During this transaction, he accidentally sent more money than intended to Joy’s mobile payment account.

Upon realizing the overpayment of Ksh 20,000, Joy called Tom to let him know about the mistake and promptly returned the extra money. Her honesty made a strong impression on Tom.

Tom recalled: “I was really taken by Joy’s reaction and honesty. Not everyone was honest with me in Kenya in the past. Without Joy calling me, I wouldn’t have noticed that I overpaid, even though this was a large amount. I went back to the supermarket and invited Joy for a coffee. Luckily, Joy accepted, and we ended up going to KFC, where we had a great time.”

When asked if he was seeing anyone else before meeting Joy, Tom said, “I never met anyone who caught my eye until I met Joy. Joy did not pretend to be someone she wasn’t, and I really liked that about her. I had certain proposals before, but I was looking for the right girl.”

Talking about their marriage, Tom shared, “Trust and communication are the keys to a successful marriage. We are very open with each other, and we always say what we like and what we don’t. That is a priority in our relationship.”

He further explained, “Marriage is like a flower; you have to water it every day. If you don’t, the flower will eventually die. We have a rule that we don’t let the elephants in the room stay for too long. Actually, we don’t let the elephants in the room in the first place, if you know what I mean. We talk about anything and everything, no matter how uncomfortable the subject or conversation might be. That is the key to tackling any challenge. Joy and I also laugh things off by cracking jokes about our challenges. You can bet there will be challenges, but it’s not about the issues themselves; it’s about how you deal with them.”

The couple has expressed their openness to having more children. “We both love kids. Tom wants more, but I think I need to wait a little bit. I had Amalia, so I need to heal first, but yeah, sure, three or four would be ideal,” Joy said.

When asked how many children he would like, Tom jokingly said, “I think more like 10 kids, maybe 11.”
