A white teacher has come under fire after a viral TikTok video showed her singing a racially offensive “monkey” song to a 6-year-old Black boy during his birthday celebration in class.
In the video, the teacher is first seen leading the class in the traditional rendition of “Happy Birthday.” However, she then adds what she described as a “special version” of the song, singing:
“Happy birthday to you,
You live in the zoo,
You look like a monkey,
And you smell like one too.”
The act has sparked outrage online, with many labeling it racist and degrading.
The child’s mother condemned the incident, calling it a clear example of racial insult and humiliation.
“I’m sharing this so people understand what my son experienced in his classroom. A birthday should be celebrated with kindness, not racial jokes from an adult in a position of authority,” the mother said.
