Investigators said that on July 30, human remains believed to be those of María’s unborn daughter, Alahia, were found in a wooded area close to where her mother’s body had earlier been recovered.
Authorities are working to formally confirm the identity of the remains through forensic examinations.
Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder, including Yulieth Angulo, the woman who was reportedly seen riding the motorcycle with María before her disappearance.
According to investigators, Angulo allegedly admitted that she gained María’s trust before she was lured into what police believe was a planned kidnapping and murder carried out by the group.
Authorities also revealed that two of the five suspects were allegedly making arrangements to obtain passports and flee the country before they were arrested.
The suspects are facing charges including aggravated femicide, kidnapping, and forced disappearance.
Investigators disclosed that one of the arrested suspects eventually led detectives to the wooded area where the remains believed to be those of María’s unborn baby were discovered.
