A dramatic video has gone viral showing the terrifying moment tourists fled for their lives as Mount Etna erupted, sending a massive cloud of ash more than a mile into the sky. The eruption was triggered by an avalanche of boiling rock cascading down the volcano’s slopes.
In the footage, panicked tourists are seen running for safety, while some seismology enthusiasts briefly stopped to capture photos of the rare and powerful scene before retreating.

Mount Etna, located on the east coast of Sicily near the city of Catania, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and a popular destination for visitors and researchers alike.
Speaking on the eruption, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology stated: “Over the past few hours, the activity flagged in the previous statement issued at 4.14am (3.14am BST) has carried on with strombolian explosions of growing intensity that, at the moment, are of strong intensity and nearly continuous.
“Over the past few hours, the falling of a little thin ash has been flagged in the Piano Vetore area.”
The terrifying volcanic tremor began just after 10 p.m. local time, reaching its peak around 1 a.m., with seismic activity recorded approximately 2.8 kilometers beneath the crater.
A livestream of the volcano captured the dramatic moment in real time, showing a massive ash cloud rising and then descending over parts of the island
