I thought I was going to die because the water was up to my chest and the hole was so deep — Woman recounts after falling into open manhole while walking to work

A video that has gone viral online shows the terrifying moment a woman fell into a manhole while on her way to work in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The woman, identified as Fabiana Rosa, had just gotten off a ride-hailing motorcycle and was walking toward her workplace while looking at her phone when the incident occurred.

CCTV footage shows her stepping onto a manhole cover, which suddenly gave way. She slipped and fell into the opening as the cover swung back into place above her.

A motorcyclist who had dropped her off witnessed the incident and immediately rushed to help.

The accident reportedly happened at 7:41 a.m. on May 31 in Rio de Janeiro.

Fabiana was later taken to the hospital for treatment. She recounted the terrifying experience, saying:

“I thought I was going to die, because the water was up to my chest and the hole was so deep.

“I stepped on the edge of the hole, on the metal, and just went straight in. The cover flipped, hit my forehead, and I fell inside.

“The motorbike driver saw me falling. So he got off the bike and came over, because I was calling for help.

“The residents came, got a ladder from the bakery, and pulled me out.

“I’m in a lot of pain, sore all over – my forehead, arm, leg, backside, chest. I can’t get out of bed.

“I keep thinking that if it had been a child in my place, they would have died, because a child wouldn’t be able to stay there, with all that water and cables, and it’s so deep.”

Investigators believe the accident may have been linked to suspected theft activity in the area. CCTV footage from earlier in the morning reportedly showed two men tampering with the manhole cover around 1:59 a.m.

Authorities suspect the individuals were attempting to steal copper cables from the drainage system. Although they left without taking anything, one of them allegedly replaced the cover without properly securing it.

Officials also confirmed that another nearby manhole cover had been removed in the area.

In response, the Tijuca Subprefecture stated: “The equipment has already been put back in place, and the maintenance department has been called in to ensure it is properly secured and to guarantee road safety.”

Woman shares how she endured years of abuse before her husband poured acid on her

A woman identified as Gift has opened up about the traumatic experience she allegedly suffered at the hands of her husband, Godday claiming he poured acid on her during their marriage.

Speaking in a video shared by Berekete Family, Gift narrated her ordeal and revealed that following the incident, her husband was arrested and remanded in Keffi Prison.

According to Gift, her struggles began at a young age. She explained that she was raised by her grandmother until she turned 13, when a man she had never known came into her life and introduced himself as her biological father.

She alleged that her father later handed her over to one of his friends in Abuja, where she endured severe maltreatment and was allegedly forced into sexual activities.

Gift said she eventually left the house and tried to rebuild her life. However, she later received a call from one of her husband’s friends, who informed her that her husband was seeking forgiveness and regretted his past actions.

Trusting that he had changed, she agreed to meet him at his friend’s residence. According to her, while they were sitting in the living room, her husband suddenly picked up a substance that was beside him and poured it on her. She believes the substance was acid.

Corroborating part of the story, the wife of the husband’s friend shared her account of the events leading up to the incident.

She said:”They have been having this issue several times. Sometimes, I used to settle them. So, one day, she came to my place and later went home. The man (Gift’s husband) beat her mercilessly, so she called me early in the morning. I went there and asked her what was happening. She told me that because she came to my place, her husband beat her. I asked why, and she said she didn’t know. She was crying, her face was swollen, and she said her neck was paining her. She told me he strangled her neck and nearly killed her the previous night.

“I said, ‘Why?’ While we were there, the husband came. I asked him why he beat her, and he said he did not beat her. My friend later told me I should just leave the matter.”

The witness said she eventually left them and returned to her business.

She further stated:

“So later in the evening, Gift told me that she left the man’s house because if she stayed there, he would kill her. I said, ‘Okay.’ We continued communicating with her even after she left her husband’s house.

“That very day, in November last year (2025), she told me her brother was preparing for a wedding and asked me to help her go to the market to buy some things. She said she would call me when it was time.

“To my greatest surprise, somebody later called me and asked me to rush to the hospital because something had happened. I asked what happened, and they told me the worst had happened. They said he poured acid on her.

“Since that very day, I left my shop and went there. When I saw what happened, I was angry. I called the man (Gift’s husband) and told him, ‘You have done the worst, right? You want to kill her, right?’ He said, ‘Let her die.’

“I asked him why he poured acid on her. He said, ‘Yes, I poured it on her. If she wants to die, let her die.’ I told him she would not die. Since that day, I have been with her in the hospital and have not left her. We first took her to a nearby hospital, but there was no improvement, so we moved her to another hospital, and it was the same thing.”

The emotional account has since drawn reactions online, with many expressing sympathy for Gift and calling for justice in the case.

According to her, the vehicle was stopped by men dressed in military uniforms who conducted what appeared to be a stop-and-search operation.

She alleged that the armed men accused some passengers of wrongdoing during the search process, despite no clear evidence being provided.

She further claimed that the passengers were later blindfolded and taken into a bush area, where they were held in unknown conditions.

In her emotional narration, she explained that her brother suffers from a chronic ulcer and requires frequent medical attention, raising further concern about his condition during the ordeal.

She said: “Good morning, everyone, On the, or should I say on another episode of we are not safe in this country anymore.

My brother was kidnapped last week, Friday on his way to Abuja from Portharcourt. Although before leaving he told my family, he told us that he was travelling and as the first born son of the family almost, he’s more than 30 years, so he’s old enough to go anywhere he wants to go to.

On his way to Abuja, I don’t know the route, they took, some men on army uniform stopped him and stopped them, stopped their car and pretending to do stop and search and all. And after searching all of them, I don’t know, they tried to say that one of them was we contrabando. I don’t even know. I don’t know. Like they tried to manipulate the whole thing. And they said they were going to arrest them, they were going to take them to the station. And no, these were men on army uniform and they took them into the bush, claiming that they were taking them to this station and all. And they were blindfolded and kept

for God knows how long. …….And this boy I’m talking about, this boy has chronic ulcer. This boy has chronic ulcer. This was somebody that lived with in Abuja before I came to Lagos to stay on my own, We sleep in the hospital almost every week because of the Ulcer. There is no drug this guy hasn’t taken. It’s just that serious. So I know what I’m talking about they were Without food since last week friday and they were beaten……. They collected everything from them.

If they opened your account and see that you don’t have any money inside, you’ll be beaten and threatened to be killed…..That they were all blindfolded and all inside the bush for God knows how long.

And I don’t know. They did not reach out to any of us. We’ve been trying to call him, We’ve been trying to reach him to know his whereabouts…..My mom has been worried to death. Like she’s been worried sick. And just for this morning, an unknown number called me and He said he’s in the hospital.

I don’t know. But I just thank God. Like I, I seriously thank God for his life because this boy almost died.

And he took him out to drop him out the road they just dropped him on the road  he said he doesn’t even know how he got to the hospital This was somebody that was going to find ends meet just to take care of his family after spending almost every single thing he had to travel out.

We sold our family house in Portharcourt just to help him travel out…..Just to find out that the agency he was using scammed him And for Over 5 months we’ve been looking for way to retrieve even if it’s just half of the money and before you judge that he would have used the money to start up a business here in Nigeria is this country safe? Is this country safe for anyone? Is that job and he is a fucking graduate is that job for anyone? Why why would we be looking for ways to leave the country if it is safe? Why would we be looking for ways to  leave the country if it is safe”
