Lady weds her boyfriend in Prison 6 weeks after knowing each other

Real estate agent Laura Gehrke has sparked a lot of discussion on social media after revealing that she met her husband, Joshua Stewart, through the social networking platform WriteAPrisoner.com last December.

Feeling lonely, Laura came across a video about writing to prisoners and decided to send a Christmas greeting to an inmate.

One particular profile stood out to her, and she began exchanging messages with Joshua. They quickly developed a deep connection, spending up to 11 hours a day talking on the phone. Just six weeks after they started communicating, Joshua proposed to Laura, and she said yes. In June, she flew to Washington to marry him, even though he is currently in prison for a conviction related to a controlled substance homicide.

Laura explained that she never judged Joshua based on his past. She shared, “I was sitting home alone, feeling very sad because I couldn’t be with my family due to a visa issue. Then I saw a video about WriteAPrisoner.com on TikTok. I thought I could just send one of them a message saying ‘Merry Christmas.'”

When she found Joshua’s profile, she was immediately drawn to him. “He was the second person I clicked on, and I saw that he liked poetry, which I was interested in. We really clicked. He was open about everything from the beginning, telling me so many stories about his life. I thought he was really emotionally intelligent.”

Laura decided not to focus on Joshua’s crime right away because she didn’t want to judge him solely based on that. She explained, “I was hearing a lot of stories about him growing up before I knew all the details about what he was incarcerated for. It made me see it all a bit differently. Because I knew the backstory, it didn’t change my opinion of him.”

After getting to know each other, Laura visited Joshua 12 times before they got married on the 13th visit. She described the prison wedding as feeling “super right,” with one of Joshua’s fellow inmates serving as his best man. Both families have been supportive of the marriage, with Laura noting that while her mother had some questions, she was ultimately supportive as well.
