Peru Government Classifies Transgender and non binary people as Mentally ill

The government of Peru recently made headlines by classifying transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals as mentally ill.

It was reported that Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, signed a decree into law last week that categorizes transgender individuals as having a mental illness. 

The country’s health minister claimed that this decision was made to ensure full coverage of medical attention for mental health for transgender individuals.

The health ministry clarified that the law does not mandate conversion therapy for transgender individuals.
