Man Slumps and Dies After Three of His Shops and Plaza Were Demolished at Onitsha Main Market

A man identified as Mmmaduachukwu has died after reportedly collapsing following the demolition of his three shops and plaza at Onitsha Main Market.

The incident occurred amid an ongoing restructuring and enforcement exercise at the market, where several structures have been removed as part of efforts to reorganise the area.

Reports stated that more than 1,000 shops were demolished in August 2026, with the government explaining that the exercise was carried out to remove affected structures and clear road obstructions that were contributing to drainage challenges within the market.

Mmmaduachukwu was said to have collapsed and died on Wednesday after the demolition of his properties.
