Woman faints after being caned 100 times for having an affair outside marriage in Indonesia
The punishment was carried out publicly in Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra island.
Witnesses said the woman, whose identity was not disclosed, was dressed in a brown robe and a white face covering as she was caned. Her partner was also present and was seen visibly in pain while receiving his own punishment.
During the sentencing, the woman reportedly fainted after the flogging, drawing attention from onlookers at the public execution of the sentence.
Aceh is the only region in Indonesia that enforces Sharia-based criminal law, which applies to both residents and visitors in the province.
The law in Aceh prohibits a range of actions including extramarital sex, gambling, alcohol consumption, and homosexual acts. Offenders found guilty can be publicly caned as part of their punishment.
Authorities in the province also impose severe penalties for more serious crimes. In cases such as child sexual abuse, punishments can include up to 200 lashes, lengthy prison sentences, or heavy fines equivalent to the value of gold.
