World Cup airport flooded with sewage weeks before tournament

A major incident at Mexico City International Airport has gone viral after sewage flooded parts of the terminal just weeks before the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

In widely circulated videos, dark liquid could be seen flowing through corridors in Terminal 1, forcing passengers to walk through the mess as they attempted to exit the area. The situation appeared chaotic, with visible damage including debris from a partially collapsed ceiling scattered on the floor.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 3 p.m. on April 29 in Terminal 1, the airport’s busiest hub.

In a statement, airport authorities explained that ongoing maintenance and renovation work had accidentally damaged a pipe on an upper floor. The resulting leak caused sewage to rush down a ramp designed for disabled passengers before spreading into crowded sections of the terminal.

Officials said swift action was taken to manage the situation, including temporarily shutting off water supply to restrooms as a precautionary measure.

Efforts were also made to contain the damage and restore normal operations, though it remains unclear if full repairs have been completed.

The incident comes amid large-scale refurbishment work at the airport, which began in May 2025 in preparation for the World Cup. Reports indicate that nearly 9 billion MXN (£381 million) has been invested in upgrades.

However, by February 2026, only about 40 percent of the work had been completed. Authorities expect progress to reach approximately 80 percent by the start of the tournament, with remaining improvements scheduled to continue afterward.
