Former Goalkeeper Georg Koch Di£s at 54 After Battle With Pancreatic Cancer

Former professional goalkeeper Georg Koch has died at the age of 54 following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Reports indicate that Koch had been fighting the illness for about two years after doctors informed him that he had only six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, he continued his fight for far longer before tragically passing away.

Koch began his professional football career with Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1992, competing in the Bundesliga. His performances as a goalkeeper helped establish him as a respected figure in German football.

Over the course of his career, he made 213 appearances in top-flight football and another 165 appearances in the second division, demonstrating consistency and longevity between the posts.

One of the most dramatic moments of Koch’s career occurred while he was playing for Rapid Vienna during a match against fierce rivals Austria Wien.

During the derby, a firecracker exploded near him on the pitch, leaving him with significant hearing damage and serious balance problems. The injuries eventually forced him to retire from professional football in 2009.

Later that same year, Koch attempted a short comeback to the sport he loved. In September 2009, he came out of retirement to join sixth-tier German side SC Herford.

However, his return was brief. Koch made just one senior appearance for the club before announcing his second and final retirement only two months after signing.

During his career, Koch also enjoyed success with Dinamo Zagreb, where he helped the club win both the league title and the Croatian Cup.

After stepping away from playing professionally, he remained connected to the sport by working as a goalkeeping coach, sharing his experience and knowledge with younger players.

Koch, who was born in Bergisch Gladbach, leaves behind a legacy as a dedicated goalkeeper whose career spanned several clubs and leagues across Europe.
