Archaeologists Discovers 2,000-Year-Old Blackened Teeth

The discovery was made by Yue Zhang and his research team from the Australian National University.

According to the researchers, the practice involved using iron found in large quantities within the region to dye teeth a deep black color.

Explaining the findings, Yue said:

“We identified a diagnostic signature of tooth blackening in ancient samples, pointing to iron salts,”

He further noted:

“These were likely combined with tannin-rich substances, as the primary active components responsible for the colouring process.”

Researchers also highlighted the cultural significance of the tradition. Oral accounts suggest that blackened teeth were viewed as a symbol of identity and humanity.

“Some oral traditions further portray blackened teeth as both a defining trait distinguishing people from humanoid devils, and an identity marker in cases of abduction by foreign invaders.”
