23-Year-Old South African Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for M£rder of His Newborn Son

A 23-year-old South African man, Sibusiso Patrick Shongwe, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the m£rder of his three-week-old son in Driekoppies.

Shongwe was convicted at the Mpumalanga High Court for k!ll!ng the infant in March 2023.

During the trial, the court heard that Shongwe initially denied being the child’s father when the baby’s mother, Noluthando Mlambo, became pregnant. He reportedly pressured her to terminate the pregnancy.

The baby’s d£ath occurred on March 1, 2023, after Shongwe arranged to meet Mlambo, claiming he wanted to provide items for the child. When they met on the street, he allegedly sent the child’s grandmother away.

Shortly afterward, three unidentified men reportedly confronted Mlambo, creating a distraction that allowed Shongwe to seize the infant and flee the scene.

The baby’s body was discovered in nearby bushes two days later. A post-mortem examination revealed that the child died from sharp-force injur!es to the neck.

Although Shongwe denied taking the child during the trial, State Advocate Senzo Zindela presented strong evidence, including witness testimonies and a confession linking him to the crime. The court was told that Shongwe showed no remorse for his actions.

In sentencing, the judge highlighted South Africa’s high levels of violent crime and the growing erosion of respect for human life. Finding no substantial or compelling circumstances to justify a lesser sentence, the court imposed the prescribed life imprisonment.

Shongwe was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his application for leave to appeal was dismissed.
