81-Year-Old Woman Reveals She Buried Her Baby Without Knowing His Br@in Had Been Removed, Blames Hospital
An 81-year-old woman, Jane Andrews, has shared the heartbreaking story of how her six-week-old baby died in January 1980—only for her to later discover that she buried him without knowing his br@in had been removed.
In an interview with Metro, Jane said the tragedy happened at Southampton General Hospital, where she gave birth to her son, John.
She explained that at the time of his burial, she believed her baby was whole, only to later learn the devastating truth.
“I thought John was all complete. But now I know I never buried him completely.
“i was deprived of my final goodbyes. That is hard to live with. I think it is disgusting and terrible.”
Jane shared that she was working as a shop assistant in Salisbury when she found out she was pregnant with John. His birth came after years of heartbreak, including the loss of her first son, Michael, who died shortly after being born in 1967.
Following Michael’s death, Jane suffered several miscarriages and reproductive health issues before becoming pregnant with John. Doctors later classified the pregnancy as high-risk after she had been prescribed the controversial drug DES, which she believes caused a life-threatening tumour.
As a result of complications, her waters broke early, and she was rushed to Southampton General Hospital for an emergency caesarean section in a bid to save her baby.
When Jane regained consciousness, John had been placed in the hospital’s special care baby unit.
“I got him christened as soon as I could because it wasn’t clear if he was going to make it.
“Each day I was allowed to go down and look at him in an incubator and I was allowed to just hold his hand.”
Tragically, John later died from pneumonia, prematurity, birth asphyxia, and respiratory distress syndrome, just as Jane was preparing to bring him home.
“They let me nurse him in a special baby unit for a few minutes, and they took him away.”
She said that was the last time she saw her son’s body, as she was not allowed to see him again before he was buried.
“I wanted to see him before the burial, but it was either I wasn’t allowed to or it was advisable not to. I always wondered why.”
An undertaker later told her it was because she would not want to see his body after a post-mortem examination.
At the time, Jane accepted the explanation and went on to train as a nurse, believing she was giving back to the NHS. However, over the years, questions continued to haunt her.
“I blamed myself all the time for John’s death. That is hard to live with when you have that 24/7 over your head.
“But the more I thought about it, when you lose somebody you are allowed to see them before they are buried and spend time with them.”
In 2001, Jane wrote to the hospital seeking answers. She said nothing could have prepared her for the response she received from the then Chief Executive of University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust, David Moss.
He told her:
“You are probably aware that after John’s death in 1980, a post mortem examination was carried out at the request of the doctor to try and establish why he died.
“I can now confirm that John’s brain was removed as part of this examination.
“I can also confirm that after the post mortem investigations were completed, the hospital arranged for his brain to be respectfully disposed of by cremation.”
The letter added that John’s body had been kept in a special preserving fluid for up to eight weeks and included an unreserved apology, stating Jane was not informed at the time to avoid causing further distress.
“When I read the letter it made me feel worse.
“All the time I had been blaming myself. I feel that I was cheated from having him buried respectfully.
“I do not know what happened to his brain. If it was ‘disposed of properly’ why was it not put in an urn?”
The hospital also confirmed that “very small samples of tissue” were taken from other parts of John’s body, adding:
“I am sorry that you were not told about this at the time of your baby’s death.
“This was not because anyone was deliberately trying to withhold information.”
Jane’s granddaughter, Emma, also spoke about the impact the discovery had on their family.
“She had a newborn baby whose organ was ripped apart, and his mother had no chance of saying goodbye.
“It makes you wonder. Was this just her? Was this other people? Why did my nan have to live through this?
“If there’s one thing that I can go out and do for her now, it is reclaim some justice for her. She’s alive, and it’s her time to tell her tale.”
Emma, who has faced reproductive issues throughout her life, describes herself as a “DES granddaughter” due to the drug her grandmother was prescribed.
She is now part of a campaign seeking justice for those affected by DES and says serious questions remain unanswered about what role the drug may have played in John’s death.

The young couple had reportedly spent their final hours making preparations for their September 20 wedding before their plans were cut short by the devastating incident in Escuintla, Guatemala.
The crash occurred on September 19 at about 1pm, involving several vehicles and leaving multiple people dead and injured.

Reports indicate that Angelica was travelling on a scooter with her mother, while Daniel was riding a motorcycle he had borrowed from his uncle when the crash occurred.
Emergency responders were faced with the additional danger of spilled fuel following the collision. The road was subsequently closed in both directions while firefighters worked to cover the fuel with foam and secure the area.
Daniel and Angelica had been preparing to exchange their vows on September 20 at 3pm at Shaddai Christian Ministry in Masagua.
Just hours before the crash, Daniel had shared a video showing newlyweds walking out of a church, seemingly looking forward to his own wedding.
He captioned the clip: “Love, us on Sunday.”
Instead of celebrating their marriage the following day, family and friends gathered for their funeral.
Daniel and Angelica were eventually laid to rest at Masagua Cemetery wearing the outfits they had intended to wear for their wedding.
Angelica was dressed in the white wedding gown she had brought from Canada, while Daniel wore the beige suit he had prepared for the ceremony.
Wedding decorations were placed around their coffins, with an arch decorated with white flowers forming part of the emotional farewell.
Two bridesmaids, dressed in pink, also placed the couple’s wedding rings on their caskets during the burial ceremony.
Angelica’s mother, who survived the crash, remained in hospital awaiting surgery on her leg and was unable to join the funeral procession for her daughter.
The tragedy has left their families mourning the loss of two young people who had been preparing to begin married life together, only for their wedding plans to end just hours before the ceremony was due to take place.
Angelica had also responded to Daniel before the tragedy, saying: “God willing, that will be it, my love.”

Sara reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest after collapsing at her home in Italy on September 12, just days after her wedding to her husband, Davide Martina.

According to reports, Davide immediately contacted emergency services after finding his wife unresponsive. Emergency responders arrived about four minutes later and spent around an hour and a half attempting to restart Sara’s heart.
She was later airlifted to a hospital in Brescia, with the flight taking approximately eight minutes.
Despite efforts to save her life, Sara died at around 9pm on September 12.
Sara was born and raised in Brescia before moving to Venice, where she studied Oriental Languages at Ca’ Foscari University.
After completing her studies, she embarked on an international career that took her to several countries.
She spent 11 years living and working in Shanghai, China, where she worked as a quality manager for clothing company Scout.
Sara later lived in Istanbul, Turkey, for two years and also spent several years in Cape Verde.
She is survived by her parents, Vincenzo and Carla, along with her aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Her funeral was held in Moniga on September 21, where Sara had been living with her new husband.

When Malia was interviewed by investigators on September 15, she confirmed that she was the woman shown in the footage and that the dog was the family pet.
However, she denied engaging in any sexual activity with the animal. According to the sheriff’s office, she said she had been lying with and petting the dog but was unable to provide an explanation that investigators considered consistent with what was shown in the footage. She eventually requested an attorney, ending the interview.
Malia was subsequently arrested and booked into the Charlotte County Jail. She has since been released, according to reports.
Following her arrest, Malia’s friends launched an online fundraiser seeking money for her legal expenses and support for her two sons.
The fundraiser says Malia and her children have had their lives “turned upside down” following what it describes as a difficult situation involving her estranged husband and accusations that she maintains are untrue.

The incident occurred at Buruburu Police Station, where Bernice Achieng’ had reportedly gone to visit her boyfriend. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the woman arrived at the station carrying an unsealed loaf of bread and asked officers to deliver it to the detainee.
The unusual state of the bread reportedly raised concerns among officers, prompting them to inspect the package before it could be handed over.
Their search uncovered five rolls of bhang and a matchbox concealed inside the loaf.
The DCI said a total of 12 rolls were recovered during the operation.
“A visit to a detained boyfriend instead landed a 26-year-old woman in police custody, after officers manning Buruburu Police Station’s report office desk discovered bhang hidden inside a loaf of bread,” the statement read.
“Bernice Achieng had come to see her boyfriend, currently held in police custody, and asked officers to pass him the loaf.
“But the unsealed package raised suspicion and upon search, five rolls of bhang and a matchbox were discovered buried deep in the loaf of bread.
“The find prompted a further search, turning up a further seven rolls of bhang stuffed in the pocket of her jacket, making it twelve rolls in total recovered.
“Achieng, is now in custody with the exhibits secured and is expected to be arraigned.”
The DCI disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Achieng remains in custody as police secure the recovered items ahead of her expected arraignment.
The incident happened on Friday, September 18, 2026, in an open field near South Old State Road, north of East Robbins Road, in Ellendale, Sussex County.

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Santos Maria Chilel Soto of Georgetown, Delaware. Responding troopers provided emergency medical care before she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police identified the hunter as Walter Moorhead of Salisbury, Maryland. According to the preliminary investigation, Soto was walking through the field with a man and two children while Moorhead was hunting deer from a ground blind.
Police said Moorhead believed he had seen a deer and fired his rifle, striking Soto.
Moorhead was taken into custody at the scene before being charged with felony manslaughter, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.
He was arraigned and later released after posting a $43,000 cash bond. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate the incident.
Soto was reportedly a mother of five and originally from Guatemala. Following her death, her family launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses and the cost of transporting her body to Guatemala for burial.
The family said the unexpected death had left them facing significant financial pressure while grieving her loss.

The incident reportedly occurred around 7pm on Friday, September 18, 2026, in the Katsalle area of Rogo town.
According to Daily Trust, a resident identified as Auwal Kazagi Rogo said residents rushed to the area after hearing cries from Bilkisu, who reportedly claimed that her husband had been kidnapped and killed.
Kazagi said residents who arrived at the scene found Gausu with an injury to his head.
He said:
Police were subsequently contacted and the man’s body was taken away as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death began.
According to the resident, Gausu had reportedly become involved with another woman and was planning to marry her as his second wife.
His reported plans had led to disagreements between him and Bilkisu, with elders previously intervening in an attempt to settle the matter.
Kazagi said tensions between the couple continued despite the intervention.
Bilkisu was subsequently arrested by the police as a suspect in connection with her husband’s death, while investigations remain ongoing.
Gausu was buried on Saturday morning in Rogo according to Islamic rites.
The couple had reportedly been married for nearly seven years and had two children. Bilkisu is also said to be pregnant with the deceased man’s child.
Sources in the area further claimed that Gausu had asked his fiancée’s family to move the planned wedding date forward by two months because of the disagreement with his wife.
