Missing Cyclists Found Alive After 6 Days Lost in Forest

Two friends who went missing during a cycling trip have been found alive after surviving six days lost in a dense forest in Brazil without food.

The incident occurred on January 14, when Gilberto, 62, and Carlos, 56, set out on a cycling trail they had organized the same day. When they failed to return, concern grew, and a search operation was launched.

According to reports, the search began after one of Gilberto’s children alerted the Fire Brigade, with a police report filed the following day, January 15.

In the last audio message sent by Gilberto, he could be heard saying:
“We came to do the trail here and got lost. Now we’re going down the river, you know? I’m not sure we’ll make it today.”
The sound of rushing water could also be heard in the background. At the time, the men only had water with them during the ride.

After days of searching, firefighters located the two men around 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, near Pedro de Toledo, Brazil. It was revealed that the friends had covered about 277 kilometers (172 miles) through thick forest in Juquitiba, São Paulo state.

Both men were taken to the hospital after being rescued. Gilberto was discharged on January 21, while Carlos remains hospitalized and is reportedly recovering well.

Speaking to local media, Gilberto’s daughter, Ana Paula Alves, said:
“He’s doing well, talking and walking normally. They were sitting side by side on IV drips, sharing stories about what they went through and laughing.”

She added that despite nearly losing hope, her father remained optimistic, saying:
“Have faith, they’re going to rescue us.”

Reports revealed that the two men survived by drinking water from streams, while Gilberto also ate hearts of palm — the tender inner core of palm trees — to stay alive until help arrived.
