An 11-year-old boy, identified as Avory Woolery, has been praised as a hero after fearlessly diving into a swimming pool to rescue a man who was found unconscious underwater.

The incident occurred at an apartment complex pool in Lexington at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1.

According to Avory, he noticed the man lying unconscious beneath the water while others at the pool appeared unsure of what to do.

Recalling the dramatic rescue, he said:

“I was like, somebody’s gotta do something. No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater. I grabbed him up.”

He added:

“There was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He’s a human being. He should be treated as such.”

After Avory pulled the man to the surface, another person at the pool helped drag the victim onto the pool deck.

The boy said the man’s friend immediately began performing CPR while others called emergency services.

“His friend, I believe, put him on the floor and started doing CPR on him to try and save him the best he could, until somebody called 911,” Woolery recalled.

The Lexington Fire Department said the man was transported to a hospital in serious condition but did not release further details about his injuries.

As of Friday, July 3, his condition had not been publicly updated.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stirred reactions on social media after playfully referring to his wife, First Lady Remi Tinubu, as “Iya Alakara” (Mama Akara Seller) during a public event.

The President made the remark on Thursday, July 2, while speaking at the Presidential Press Corps Dinner held at the State House in Abuja.

His comment comes just days after the First Lady trended online over remarks she made while encouraging Nigerians to embrace small businesses.

During her speech, Remi Tinubu advised Nigerians to consider ventures such as selling akara, roasting corn, selling tomatoes, and making or selling kuli-kuli as legitimate means of earning a living.

A 69-year-old woman has been rescued alive after spending three days trapped beneath the rubble of a building that collapsed during the devastating earthquake in Venezuela.

The survivor, identified as Marlene Santana, was pulled from the debris after rescue teams, assisted by a sniffer dog, located her beneath the remains of the four-storey building.

Shortly after being rescued, Marlene reportedly asked for a Coca-Cola.

Speaking from her hospital bed, she recounted the ordeal, saying:

“They brought me water through one of those little hoses.

“It was the most delicious water in the world.

“They asked me what else I wanted. I told them a Pepsi-Cola, a Coca-Cola.

“But honestly, I didn’t mean it as something I truly needed at that moment – I had just already had that water.

“When I raised my hand and felt around, it was a very tight space. I kept touching the sides.

“I couldn’t tell if it was a wall or wood. I couldn’t make it out because there was no light, nothing at all.”

Doctors said Marlene sustained a head injury but survived the collapse despite spending three days trapped beneath the wreckage.

She said she believes she was trapped in what appeared to be the kitchen area of the building.

Marlene also revealed that her husband was inside the house when it collapsed, but she has not received any information about his whereabouts.

She added:

“I told them: I can’t go on any more, because I’m badly injured underneath, my back. I can’t.

“They said to me, ‘Marlene, make one more effort.’”

“There were moments when I thought I wasn’t going to make it out, because I felt like I was running out of air.”

Expressing concern for her loved ones, she said:

“My daughter lived on the second floor. I don’t know anything about her.

“I don’t know anything about my husband. I don’t know anything about my sister.”

Rescue efforts continue in affected areas as authorities search for more survivors following the devastating earthquake.

Archaeologists in northeastern France have uncovered ancient ceramic jars containing at least 25,000 bronze and copper Roman coins dating back to the 3rd century CE.

The remarkable discovery was made during a routine excavation carried out by archaeologists from France’s National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP), covering an area of approximately 1,500 square metres.

In addition to the coin-filled jars, the excavation has revealed important clues about the history of Senon, showing how the settlement evolved from a Gallic village into a prosperous Roman town before eventually being destroyed by fire.

At the deepest layers of the site, archaeologists uncovered traces of early buildings, including pits, ditches, and postholes that once supported wooden walls and clay structures.

The remains date back to the mid-2nd century BCE, when the area was inhabited by the Mediomatrici, a Celtic people whose capital was Divodurum Mediomatricorum, now known as Metz in modern-day France.

Following the Roman conquest of Gaul under Julius Caesar, the settlement entered a period of significant growth.

Archaeologists identified more than a dozen small limestone quarries, some reaching nearly three metres in depth, which were dug behind homes. These quarries were later repurposed as storage spaces and for other domestic uses, supporting centuries of construction and development.

By the late 1st century CE, the newly excavated section of Senon had developed into an organized Roman neighbourhood. Researchers uncovered two paved streets lined with stone houses featuring lime-coated floors, hypocaust heating systems, ovens, and underground cellars.

Courtyards located behind many of the homes appear to have been used as workshops, suggesting that the area was home to skilled artisans and merchants.

The quality of the buildings and the everyday objects recovered from the site indicate that many of Senon’s residents enjoyed a relatively comfortable standard of living during the Roman era.

Archaeologists believe the discovery offers valuable insight into daily life, urban development, and economic activity in Roman Gaul.

A Nigerian woman who recently returned from South Africa has shared her experience of living in the country, describing the challenges she said she faced as a foreign national.

Speaking in an interview with TheCable, Ilugbadebo Oyebola said she spent 11 years in South Africa, adding that the experience was traumatic for her and her family.

According to Oyebola, one of the most painful experiences occurred when she was admitted to a South African hospital to give birth.

She alleged that after delivering her baby, a nurse instructed her to clean up the blood despite the fact that she was still suffering from heavy bleeding after childbirth.

Oyebola claimed the treatment changed after the nurse realized she was a foreigner and could not speak the local language.

She also said her children experienced discrimination at school because they were not South African citizens.

Reflecting on her return to Nigeria, Oyebola expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government and everyone involved in facilitating the repatriation of Nigerians from South Africa.

She described her return home as a life-changing opportunity and said she was thankful for the support she received.

An emotional video has captured the moment a Malawian father broke down in tears at the Old Durban Drive-In site in South Africa, where foreign nationals are being accommodated as part of ongoing repatriation arrangements.

The father is among several migrants currently awaiting processing and return to Malawi following relocation procedures linked to immigration enforcement operations.

Speaking emotionally about his situation, he said:

“No house. No mattress. No promise of tomorrow. Just a father, and a baby who does not understand why they are here.”

He explained that he had travelled to South Africa in search of better job opportunities and a means to provide for his family.

However, he is now preparing to return to Malawi with only his young child and a few personal belongings.

A woman from Gombe State, identified as Barira Alhassan, has accused doctors at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital of removing one of her kidneys during a Caesarean section (C-section), an allegation the hospital has strongly denied.

Barira claimed she entered the hospital with both kidneys intact but was later informed that she was living with only one kidney after the surgery.

Speaking about her experience, she said she underwent the Caesarean section on April 8, 2026. A few days after the operation, she began experiencing severe health complications, including persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, body swelling, and painful urination.

According to her, the symptoms became so concerning that she started asking other women who had undergone C-sections whether such complications were normal, noting that it was her first surgical delivery despite having given birth to ten children.

Barira said the shocking discovery came after a doctor examined her and informed her that she had only one kidney.

“I was devastated when the doctor told me I had only one kidney. He even asked if I had sold it. When I told him I hadn’t, he reassured me that people can still live normal lives with one kidney and prescribed medication for me,” she said.

She further alleged that after her family demanded answers, the hospital appeared to discourage them from making the matter public.

Her family insists that medical scans carried out in 2015 confirmed she had two healthy kidneys before the operation.

Her brother, Zakariyya Alhassan, said their father visited the hospital seeking an explanation but was unable to get satisfactory answers from the medical team.

He also claimed the family requested Barira’s medical records from the hospital but was informed that no records relating to her treatment could be found, despite the fact that she had been receiving care there and delivered her baby at the facility.

According to him, the missing records further raised the family’s suspicions.

After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain answers from the hospital, the family submitted a petition to the Gombe State Ministry of Health, calling for an independent investigation into the incident.

Zakariyya disclosed that ministry officials later invited the patient, her husband, and hospital representatives for a meeting and advised all parties not to make public statements until investigations were concluded.

However, the family maintains that it is dissatisfied with the handling of the matter and continues to demand a transparent investigation.

Barira said her only desire is to know what truly happened and to receive justice.

“I want a proper investigation to determine how I lost my kidney and for justice to be served,” she said.

Responding to the claims, the management of Gombe State Specialist Hospital described the allegations as false, misleading, and unsupported by medical evidence.

In an official statement, the hospital explained that theatre records showed Barira only underwent an emergency Caesarean section and that no surgical procedure involving her kidneys was carried out.

The hospital further revealed that following concerns raised by the patient’s family, it sponsored a CT Intravenous Urogram (CT-IVU) at a Federal Teaching Hospital to establish the facts.

According to the hospital, the scan indicated findings consistent with a congenital absence of one kidney, suggesting that the condition existed from birth rather than being caused by surgery.

Management emphasized that it covered the cost of the examination in an effort to ensure transparency and determine the truth.

The statement added that hospital officials and clinicians met with the family on two separate occasions to explain the scan results and review all available medical records.

It also disclosed that the family later requested another independent medical examination, a request the hospital approved.

According to the hospital, it is currently awaiting the outcome of that independent investigation.

The hospital concluded by alleging that the ongoing social media campaign surrounding the case appears aimed at damaging its reputation and undermining public confidence in healthcare professionals.

Management maintained that no kidney was removed during Barira Alhassan’s Caesarean section.

A wedding celebration in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, turned violent after a groomsman allegedly shot two guests during an argument over meatballs.

Police are searching for 41-year-old Thomas Redrick Williams, who is accused of opening fire at the reception before fleeing the scene.

Authorities said Williams is wanted on suspicion of first-degree reckless injury with the use of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and bail jumping.

The shooting reportedly occurred on June 20 at the Aria Business Center in Milwaukee. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

According to a criminal complaint, the incident began after the bride’s cousin noticed Williams serving himself meatballs with his bare hands and asked him to use a plate and serving utensils instead.

The disagreement escalated, and prosecutors said Williams allegedly punched the bride’s cousin. When the bride’s brother-in-law attempted to intervene and calm the situation, the confrontation became physical.

Investigators allege that Williams then pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

The woman was reportedly shot in the arm and leg, while the man sustained a gunshot wound to the back of the neck. Both victims survived and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to investigators, the bride witnessed the shooting and followed Williams outside as he attempted to leave. She reportedly confronted him beside his vehicle and grabbed his key fob in an effort to stop him from driving away.

Williams allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Police later searched the car, which is registered in his wife’s name, and reportedly recovered a Taurus 9mm handgun.

When officers later spoke with Williams’ wife, she said they had attended the wedding together and that he had dropped her off at home before returning with her vehicle.

Authorities also disclosed that Williams was already out on bond in a separate criminal case when the shooting occurred.

A warrant has since been issued for his arrest, and police continue to search for him.

A South African man has reportedly lost his life after he was mistaken for a foreign national during ongoing anti-immigration protests in South Africa.

According to reports, the victim was one of two people who were initially mistaken for foreigners during the unrest.

The incident reportedly occurred in Germiston, where the man was selling goods when he was confronted by a group of people who allegedly accused him of being a foreign national.

Witnesses claimed that the man repeatedly insisted that he was South African. However, his attackers allegedly refused to believe him and continued assaulting him.

The victim reportedly died from the injuries he sustained during the attack.

A 36-year-old man, identified as John Tooson, has been sentenced to two life terms in prison after pleading guilty to the murders of his girlfriend and her 18-year-old sister in Kentucky, United States.

Tooson was arrested in 2022 after fatally shooting the two sisters at an apartment in Ashland, Kentucky.

According to court records, he received two life sentences in Boyd Circuit Court after pleading guilty to two counts of murder, first-degree robbery, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, wanton endangerment, and being a persistent felony offender.

Prosecutors said Tooson was in a relationship with 20-year-old Selina Easter when he entered her apartment in June 2022 and shot her and her younger sister, Summer Algarakhuly, 18.

At the time of the shooting, the couple’s newborn baby girl was reportedly inside the apartment.

After the incident, Tooson fled the scene but was later arrested in Ohio.

During the sentencing hearing, family members spoke about the lasting impact the murders have had on the victims’ children.

One relative, who is now raising Summer’s daughter, said:

“I was only ever supposed to be her aunt.”

She added:

“She will never know what it feels like to run into her mother Summer’s arms after a bad day.”

Boyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rhonda Copley described the sentencing as an important step toward justice.

She said:

“The plea and sentencing of John Tooson brings accountability for the senseless and tragic loss of two young lives, Selina and Summer.”

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman also commented on the case, saying:

“A mother can never be replaced. The sentences delivered do not heal the emptiness left behind, but, we hope, provide justice for all those who loved these two young women.”

Under Kentucky law, Tooson will become eligible for parole after serving 25 years in prison.
