I was left in pain for 54 hours— Mother shares ordeal after being left unattended during labour

Published

on

A mother has opened up about her difficult childbirth experience, revealing that she was left unattended for several hours while in labour, which she believes contributed to serious complications.

The mother, Rachel Coles, who welcomed her baby in September 2021, said she endured 54 hours of labour and suffered complications she alleges were due to a “lack of intervention.”

According to Rachel, she felt that no one was available to help her during crucial moments.

She explained that about 24 hours into labour, her water broke, but she was not progressing and had not reached 4cm dilation.
She was later moved to an antenatal ward, where she continued to experience painful contractions.

Rachel added that she was given an epidural, but it failed twice, and medical staff had to redo it.

Recalling her experience to metro, she said: “My husband was sent home and was told he could only come back when I was going to be admitted to the labour ward.”

She continued: “I did not consent to it and it should not have been done as my waters had broken,” noting that she was eventually given a bed after six hours of labour.

Up until then, she had only been offered gas and air for pain relief.

Rachel said that after what felt like an endless wait, she was finally told she was ready to push: “After what felt like forever, I got told I was ready to push. At this point, the epidural had completely worn off and I could feel the pressure.”

According to her, it then took two hours to push her son out, with doctors fearing the baby might be stuck.

After enduring contractions for 54 hours, she was placed on a pitocin drip for longer than recommended. She later learned that her placenta had started to deteriorate internally.

She added: “When they gave me the injection to birth the placenta, it broke up and left a small tear in my uterus, which caused me to lose three litres of blood. About 20 doctors ran into the room, and I was handed a form to consent to surgery that could’ve ended in a full hysterectomy if they could not stop the bleeding.”

Three hours after delivering her baby, she woke up but said the midwives did not explain what had happened. She also claimed she was not offered any aftercare and was simply told to book a ‘birth reflection review’, which was scheduled nearly three years later.

Recalling the experience, she said: “I started to see a private therapist who diagnosed me with PTSD due to the birth trauma,’ Rachel reflects.

“It took me a long time, but I am now recovered. I do want a second child, but my concerns are still there, and I do think the trauma might resurface if I were to be pregnant and be approaching birth.

“I remember pressing the emergency button after I’d come out of surgery and a lady came in and said she couldn’t help me, said it wasn’t her baby, wasn’t her problem and walked out and left me there”
