My Wife Saved My Life During My Struggles with Heavy Drinking- Wayne Rooney Admits

Former England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has made a candid revelation about his past struggles, admitting that if not for his wife, he might not be alive today.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Rooney opened up to his former teammate and close friend, Rio Ferdinand, about the challenges he faced during the peak of his football career.

The 38-year-old legend revealed that at one point, he would “drink for two days straight”, using alcohol as a way to cope with the pressures of fame and performance on the pitch.

According to Rooney, it was his wife, Coleen Rooney, who stepped in and helped him manage his behavior.

He said: “She helped me control that massively and managed me because I needed managing,” Rooney said, adding, “I honestly believe, if she weren’t there, I’d be dead.”

He shared that he met his wife while they were in secondary school in Liverpool. After dating for six years, they got married in 2008.

He added: “When I was 17, she could see, she knew my mind and she knew I was a bit out there.

“I loved my football, obsessed with football, but also I loved a night out or whatever, going out. She’s seen it very early on and she’s controlled that. Well, not controlled, but helped me control that massively.”
