Grandmother Arrested for Poisoning Grandkids and Family Cat with Cake, Leaving 9-Year-Old Dead
A 59-year-old grandmother in Brazil has been arrested after allegedly poisoning her two grandchildren with a cake, leading to the tragic death of her 9-year-old granddaughter.
The woman, identified as Izabel Cardoso de Andrade, reportedly baked the cake for afternoon tea while caring for her grandchildren during their summer holidays.

After eating, 9-year-old Alana dos Santos Cardoso Marques immediately fell ill, while her older sibling, aged 11, only ate a small portion because she disliked the taste. The older child developed mild symptoms but survived.
The family’s pet cat, which also ate some of the cake, became sick as well.
According to neighbors, the children soon began to complain of severe abdominal pain, and Alana started vomiting a white fluid. Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, she died from cardiopulmonary arrest at her grandmother’s home in eastern BrasÃlia on July 23rd.
When police arrived, a neighbor handed over the poisoned cat, which was still alive but suffering similar symptoms.

Investigators collected samples of the cake, and toxicology tests revealed the presence of pesticides and agrochemicals—highly dangerous substances that can cause seizures, breathing difficulties, cramps, and death if untreated.
Following the investigation, Izabel was arrested on September 19th. Police are still working to determine whether the poisoning was intentional or accidental.
