Teen Left Bald After Hairdresser Misused Hair Dye Ahead of Graduation and Prom

What was supposed to be a glamorous makeover for her big graduation and prom night turned into a devastating ordeal for 18-year-old Kyrie Martin, after a hair dye session went horribly wrong.

Kyrie, who had successfully dyed her hair multiple times in the past, booked her usual salon appointment on February 11. But this time, as the stylist applied foils, she began to feel a burning sensation on her scalp. Alarmed, she was rushed to the sink, where the hairdresser noticed her hair was smoking.

Despite asking the stylist to stop, the damage was already done. Kyrie paid $50 for the session and went home, only for the situation to worsen. After speaking with her mother, she noticed a red line across her scalp and swelling on her head. Doctors later confirmed that she had suffered first-degree chemical burns. Over the following days, chunks of her skin and hair began to fall out. When she returned to the hospital, medics had to remove an orange-sized crater of dead skin, leaving her with a permanent bald spot in the middle of her head.

Narrating, she said: “I like dying my hair. I’ve been dying my hair since I was 14 years old, I’ve never experienced a bad dye job.

“I decided to go to this hairdresser because she’d cut my hair when I was younger, she’d been in the business for a while.

“I looked at her clients and reviews and thought she did a good job.

“She started lightening it with foils to bring it blonde. After about an hour, my entire head felt like it was on fire.

“I have never felt pain like that before. I told her ‘it feels really hot’ and started to cry and told her it really hurt.

“She started rinsing it off and taking the foils off then I just saw her eyes go wide.

“She said ‘I don’t know what’s happened but your hair is smoking.

“I didn’t know what had happened, nothing like that had happened to me before.

“The healing process was very long. The skin took a while to grow back. It took nearly two months just for the wound to close.

“They didn’t know if my hair would grow back or not. Nothing has grown back since, it’s a bald patch currently.

“Not one hair follicle has grown since it happened, I may never have hair there again.

“It was a very heavy thing to walk around with. It was in the middle of my senior year – I had prom and graduation

“I was in so much physical and mental pain. Everyone else was getting excited for college, and I was in and out of hospital.

“It definitely ruined my senior year, I was in a lot of pain.

“The hairdresser didn’t reach out to me or my mum once.

“If she had been that stressed, I do think she should’ve reached out. I left her salon in tears.”
