I Was Criticized for Getting Pregnant and Giving Birth to Quadruplets at 50

A 50-year-old woman named Tracey has shared her emotional journey of becoming a mother to quadruplets, revealing how she faced mockery and criticism when she first announced her pregnancy.

In an interview with Truly, Tracey said that many people judged her harshly, calling her “selfish” for having children at her age.

Looking back on her motherhood journey, she recalled how her family began: “So I had my daughter in 1986 when I was 18 and I got pregnant straight after 3 months later with my son, I have just turned 19 and I had my youngest son in 1996 when I was 20.

“Because they got their own kids my quadruplets are actually younger than some of my grand kids.

“As am older, they give me energy, all of my energy goes into them.”

Tracey also opened up about how she met her husband, Steven. She was 37 at the time, and he was 26. According to her, Steven had always wanted a large family, even though she already had three children.

Steven himself explained: “I said I want to have 5 kids, I already had 1 and time is ticking. I was just worried about getting old and not happening.”

Tracey admitted that she always dreamed of having twins. “I have always wanted twins I have been fascinated with twins I think it is because my mother always wanted twins,” she said, bursting into tears. She added, “Because if it wasn’t for she I won’t be able to do it.”

After struggling with fertility, Tracey decided to try IVF.

“My mom died in 2007 so I used my mom’s money to do it. I went for IVF, I just had a feeling deep down it was going to work and I just knew it would happen and she blessed me with 4 kids.”

She described the exact moment she found out she was pregnant:
“I remember when I was pregnant, Steve was in bed and I got the test and it just went pregnant and I was like—and we were both just like (Surprised)—we hugged each other and cried and laughed and then reality struck in and I thought oh my god I forgot to tell my kids now.”

When she broke the news to her children, the reactions were mixed but memorable.
“My daughter said oh mommy you might have twins cause you look bigger already. I think because I was 9 weeks and told me to take a private scan.

The woman was scanning me and I am laid on the bed she was like ‘let’s all come down and put the fan on’ and I thought oh my mom has done it again and my daughter went like ‘That’s what you get mommy Nana has done that.’ It wasn’t like tears of ‘oh my god what am I gonna do.’ It was just shock because I wasn’t expecting 4.”

On the reality of raising quadruplets, Tracey admitted it comes with challenges but also joy:
“There are good and bad times raising quadruplets but the good thing is they have got each other, they can play with each other.

If I had to put the bad points, they argue and squabbling, getting up really early—you know a time I could do a lie-on. So I chose to have them so I just go along with it and do my best at what I can.”

Her story eventually went viral after her sister-in-law encouraged her to share it.
“When it went worldwide, my sister-in-law said to me why don’t you go to the newspapers and I said oh no I want to keep it private. She went ‘why?’ If that was a young girl, she went ‘They would be interested in that.’ Rather than going to the newspaper, I realized that I was the oldest mom in the UK just to say I am pregnant with quadruplets.”

Even though her story gained massive attention, Tracey’s daughter advised her not to read the online comments. She admits that whenever she did, she reminded herself to stay calm:
“I cannot stress because then she knows if it happens, something would have happened to her babies.”
