Couple Jailed 16 Weeks and Banned from Keeping Animals for 10 Years After Dog Starved to Death

A couple in Luton, Bedfordshire, has been banned from owning animals for 10 years after their American Bulldog, named Grizzly, starved to death under their care.

Paulina Goetzen, 32, and Petrica Danila, 29, admitted to neglecting their pet and failing to provide proper nutrition. Investigations revealed that the dog eventually died from asphyxiation after choking on food at their home.

A post-mortem carried out by a vet found Grizzly had no fat tissue, severe muscle wastage, and bone marrow damage — all consistent with prolonged starvation. The vet added that the dog likely suffered for at least two weeks, experiencing weakness, fatigue, discomfort, and an inability to exercise.

In court, the couple claimed they could not afford to care for the dog or seek veterinary treatment. It was also revealed that they have three children, all living with sclerosis, a medical condition that affects tissue strength and structure.

The pair were sentenced to 16 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months. They were also banned from keeping any animals for 10 years and ordered to each pay £1,696.31 at a rate of £50 per month.

Speaking on the case, Inspector Susan Haywood said: “When I saw Grizzly’s body, it was immediately apparent that he was emaciated as all his bones and in particular his ribs were sticking out from his body.

“This poor dog would have suffered and as the vet report concluded, this could have been for a prolonged period of time.

“Pets rely on us to ensure their needs are met and there is no excuse to allow your pet to get into this sorry state.”
