Man Sentenced to 28 Years for R£pe and M£rder of Ex-Fiancée

James Cartwright has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the r*pe and m*rder of his ex-fiancée, 54-year-old Samantha Mickleburgh.

The court heard that Samantha had agreed to spend time with Cartwright at the five-star Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot, Surrey, to celebrate his 60th birthday. Despite their separation, she wanted to show kindness and ensure he did not feel lonely on his special day before moving on with her life.

However, during the visit, Cartwright str-ngled her. The following morning, he called 999, placing a ring on her finger to stage the scene as if they had engaged in consensual s-x. He initially told emergency services that she had died in her sleep, later claiming her injuries were the result of falling out of bed.

At Guildford Crown Court, prosecutors detailed how Cartwright’s actions were calculated to cover up his crime. Louise Oakley, prosecuting, described his behavior towards Samantha as “cru-l, repressive, and overbearing.”

While Cartwright was acquitted of charges relating to controlling and coercive behavior, the jury found him guilty of r@pe and m-rder.

During the sentencing, six of Samantha’s family members faced Cartwright in court, reading out emotional victim impact statements that conveyed the devastating toll her death had taken on their lives.

The judge sentenced Cartwright to 28 years in prison, calling his actions “a betrayal of trust and an act of extreme violence.”

Her sister Tracey Carter said: “Our family welcomed you into our homes and hearts and you violated that trust and kindness. You spent Christmas and other special occasions with (the family).

“I will never understand why you thought you had the right to do the horrific things that you did to Sam.’

“I wish she had never met you.

“Did you feel proud of yourself when you lied to my father, saying that Sam had died in her sleep knowing full well the horror that you had put her through?

“Do you take some kind of sadistic enjoyment in your lies? You have caused an indescribable amount of pain and suffering to our family but know this: we are strong and you cannot break us, you cannot take Sam from us.

“We now know that you have a history of controlling behaviour towards women that you have relationships with. We know you would stalk Sam and this made her fear for her safety. I hope you are never free to harm anyone again.

“I believe you are a monster – an evil, controlling, manipulative predator who really thought you were clever enough to get away with murder, my sister’s murder.’
