NASA Astronaut Butch Wilmore Retires After 25-Year Career and 9 Months in Space

Veteran NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore has officially retired following an impressive 25-year career, which included a recent nine-month mission in space.

NASA paid tribute to Wilmore, commending his dedication, service, and numerous contributions to space exploration. Known for his calm leadership and technical expertise, Wilmore leaves behind a legacy marked by excellence and resilience.

Before joining NASA, Wilmore served as a Captain in the U.S. Navy. Throughout his career, he flew on four different spacecraft and accumulated a total of 464 days in space.

His most recent mission began last year, initially planned as an eight-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). However, the mission was extended, and he finally returned to Earth in March this year.

Reflecting on Wilmore’s impact, Acting Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Stephen Koerner, expressed his gratitude: “His lasting legacy of fortitude will continue to impact and inspire the Johnson workforce, future explorers, and the nation for generations,”
