Dr. Doyin Abiola, Wife of MKO Abiola Passes Away

Dr. Doyin Abiola, the wife of the late MKO Abiola and Nigeria’s first female editor of a national daily, has passed away. She was reported to have died at 9:15 PM on Tuesday night, August 5, 2025.

Dr. Abiola was a respected veteran in Nigerian journalism, known for her groundbreaking contributions to the media industry. She began her journalism career in 1969 with the Daily Sketch Newspaper, where she launched a column titled “Tiro”, addressing public and gender-related issues.

In 1970, she left for the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism. Upon her return, she joined the Daily Times as a Features Writer and eventually rose to become the Group Features Editor. She later returned to the U.S. to complete a PhD in Communications and Political Science in 1979.

After her doctorate, Dr. Abiola rejoined the Daily Times, this time serving on the editorial board, where she worked alongside legendary journalists such as Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan.

Not long after, she was invited to join the newly established National Concord Newspaper as its pioneer daily editor. She rose through the ranks and in 1986, was appointed Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, becoming the first Nigerian woman to lead a national daily newspaper.

Her impactful career at National Concord spanned over three decades, and she served in various influential roles within Nigeria’s media landscape.

Dr. Doyin Abiola got married to MKO Abiola in 1981. Her legacy lives on as a pioneer, mentor, and fearless voice in Nigerian journalism.
