Man Denies Religious Harassment After Burning Quran Outside Turkish Consulate in London
A 50-year-old man, Hamit Coskun, has denied charges of religiously motivated harassment following the burning of a Quran outside the Turkish consulate in London.
Coskun was charged with intent to cause harassment, alarm, or distress against a religious institution of Islam during the incident, which took place on Thursday near the consulate in Rutland Gardens, Knightsbridge, central London.
The event gained further attention after a viral video showed a man burning a book outside the consulate. The same man was later seen lying on the ground as another individual kicked him, slashed toward him with a knife, and then walked away. The attacker was also seen spitting on the man and snatching the burning book from him.
Appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, Coskun, speaking through an interpreter, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He appeared in court wearing a grey tracksuit top and had a bandage on his left hand.
Following his arrest, Coskun was released on conditional bail and is scheduled to reappear at the same court on May 28.
The alleged attacker, Moussa Kadri, 59, from Kensington and Chelsea, has also been charged with causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. He was granted bail and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Coskun stated that his protest was directed against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He claimed that Turkey is being turned into a “base for radical Islamists.”
“While I was burning the Quran, I was attacked with a knife. The ambulance and the police came,” he wrote.
His actions come after he previously announced on X that he planned to burn a Quran, referring to the book as promoting terror and not recognizing the rights of non-Muslims.
The incident draws comparisons to the case of Salwan Momika, who burned a Quran outside the Stockholm Central Mosque in 2023. Momika was later killed in Södertälje, Stockholm, in a separate incident.

In a video shared on X, the woman explained that she normally sends money to her Access Bank account in Nigeria as a way of saving her funds.
According to her, she became concerned after noticing an issue with her account and attempted to contact her account officer, identified as Doris.

She said Doris initially did not respond to her messages, which she described as unusual, before eventually contacting her and asking whether she had withdrawn money from the account.
The woman said her account officer later accessed her account and printed her bank statement, where they reportedly noticed transactions involving N5 million.
She said: “She was giving me different excuses so suddnely she entered my account and told me to send her a email because she cannot enter my account again because they have blocked her, she logged into my account and printed the statement of my account and we saw the people that withdraw N5M from my account and their names is there their bvn, their photos are there that we can use to get them arrested and accorinding to my account officer, she said she would login into Palmpay and others that they use to in nigeria and i told her fine do it to see if we get any good reply.
“She then told me that accessbank did not do anything and she cannot do anything behind accessbank, I have emailed accessbank countless of times, I did not see their reply, I cry onto Nigerians please have mercy on me before accessbank kills me silently please have mercy on meN5m is too much to avoid for me……. The woman is now appealing to Nigerians, the Nigeria Police Force and Access Bank to look into the matter and help establish what happened to the money.
She also claimed that she had contacted the bank several times through email but had not received the response she expected.

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday, September 26, when two vessels were seen speeding toward the coastline with passengers on board. According to reports, the vessels approached the beach before the migrants made their way onto shore.
