Man Dies on Christmas Eve Trying to Retrieve Engagement Ring from House Fire Meant for New Year’s Eve Proposal for His girlfriend

Steven Weatherford, a 37-year-old man, tragically passed away in a house fire at his family home on Wednesday, December 25th. 

Reports indicate that Steven was visiting his family in Oakland for the holidays when the fire broke out around 6:15 a.m. During the incident, he made sure all his family members were safe before going back into the house to retrieve a recently purchased engagement ring he had planned to use for a New Year’s Eve proposal to his girlfriend.

“He started yelling, telling the family that there was a fire. I guess he was trying to make sure everybody was out of the house. He may not have known they all went out to the back,” said his aunt, Eunice Smith.

Sadly, Steven was overcome by the fire. Firefighters found him unconscious on the floor when they arrived. 

Paying tribute to him, his girlfriend, Lashante Mayo, described him as “the best person you could ever meet.”

“Steven was the best person you could ever meet. He loved his family, his friends, and everybody so much. He died trying to get them out of the house. I didn’t know he was going to propose. They told me this morning,” she shared.
