Plane Crash on Christmas day with 72 people on board

A tragic incident occurred on Christmas Day when a plane crash-landed in Kazakhstan.  

The aircraft, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190, was carrying 67 passengers and 5 crew members. It had departed from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, en route to Grozny, Russia.  

Footage from the crash showed the plane bursting into flames upon impact. Debris was scattered across the area, with parts of the fuselage broken apart. Some injured passengers were seen stumbling out of a section of the plane that remained intact.  

According to the regional health ministry, 14 survivors were initially taken to the hospital, including 5 in intensive care. Later updates revealed a total of 28 survivors, with 7 in critical condition, including three children who were among the survivors.  

Unfortunately, 10 people have been confirmed dead, and fears remain that over 40 may have lost their lives.  

Azerbaijan Airlines stated that the plane “made an emergency landing” about three kilometers from Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the Caspian Sea’s eastern shore.

‘A plane doing the Baku-Grozny route crashed near the city of Aktau. It belongs to Azerbaijan Airlines,’ the Kazakh ministry said on Telegram.

It was reported that the Embraer E190AR, registered as 4K-AZ65, issued a distress signal while flying at an altitude of 2,125 feet over the Caspian Sea.  

Survivors reported that a bird struck the aircraft’s engine, leading to the explosion of an oxygen tank onboard. “People on board began to lose consciousness,” according to the reports

Among the 28 survivors, two are children, believed to be girls aged 11 and 16.

Kazakhstan has appointed a commission to investigate the plane crash.
