I was forced to Re Marry my husband who is not alive- Woman Laments

Published

on

In the Ndegu Okpuitumo community of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, it’s a known tradition for young women to marry deceased men. This practice reportedly began after a war between the community and Osopo Esato, a neighboring area in Cross River State.

Ndidi Uche, a woman from the community, shared her experience in an interview with David Nkwa, revealing how she was pressured by her late fiancé’s family to marry him posthumously despite her initial refusal.

According to Ndidi, after her fiancé died during the war, his family approached her with dowries and gifts, pleading with her to stay and bear children for him to preserve his lineage. Narrating her story, she said:”I didn’t marry him because before he died I married him while dating him and then he was alive we actually discussed marriage when he was alive and i agreed to marry him and we started dating and while we were dating then the war broke out and they started talking about him going to fight and he started preparing to go to war then i started discouraging him same as his mother… We both did not want him to go for the war and then the traditional rulers said women had no say as to who would go to war or not because if we did the person who would have succeeded will not succeed at the war.

Ndidi explained that after receiving a warning from the traditional rulers, she and his mother decided to remain silent and let him go to war. However, later that same day, as evening fell, his lifeless body was brought back to her.

She added: “Before evening around 6pm, they brought his corps back they brought him back dead and that is how it started and then my family came to take me because according to our tradition if they had not performed martial rites over my head, I have no business staying where they are burying him and he was going to be buried immediately so they said i should leave.

She continued: “I started telling them i cannot stay with a dead man because since i agreed to marry him in life now he is dead, I would have to go and no rites has been performed on me and my family agreed with me that it was also their thinking that i was too young to come and stay for a dead man then I said okay and I left with them (Her family)

“And his mother and his family now came with gifts and dowry and started begging for me to come and stay to have children for their son so that their son’s name will not disappear and my parents refused, my father said no and my mother said no me as well i said no that i will not come and stay like that because i was still too young to stay with a dead man and be having children with him for how long will i stay like that, If i come and stay I will think that he is going somewhere and will soon come back and for how long will I do that??? i will not be able to do that.”

Ndidi further recounted how the family conveyed a message from their deity, “Amaagu.” According to the message, any woman who had been promised marriage by a warlord or was romantically involved with one in their village was required to remain with them if they passed away.

She added: “Then after a while they came back and announced to the whole village That they have gone to Amaagu which is Isi Ancestral home anf that is the diety and they said that it had given instruction that anyone who has never been betrothed or talking to or befriending or even promised marriage by a warlord who has died as a result of of war must be bounded to the warlord to have children for the warlord and because they had said those things i became afriad and then i found out that because i had refused even after they said it anytime i am sitting down, I will see him he would be standing in front of the door blocking my way and be looking at me with a matchete and i became sick, Anywhere i went I will be seeing him and then he would be calling my name and I now asked him because i was thinking about it and i asked God Is this how you want my life to be? if this is what you want for me if this is how i would go because of this.

“Something that my mother did marriage that my mother did and i was intending to do if this is how i am going to go then I agree.”

How she saw her husband again and accepting his proposal while he is dead, she added: “Then i saw him again and I told him i agree to marry you in life not in death i warned you not to go for the war but you refused and so did your mother but you refused, it is because of lack of counsel not listening to people around you that is how you died so why are you blocking my way everywhere why are you trying to kill me if i stand i will look back i would be wondering is it my footsteps sounding like this or another person’s footsteps I now realize that there is nobody standing there but Im hearing someone whistling but when i turn around I will not see anybody.”

Did it stop there??, She continued: “So after this went on one of the days i went to have my bath i knew and felt the strong presence of another person there i became really afraid then i started thinking myself that since they have said this that the diety that is of the culture and custom have instructed that we must be bound to him but i would have no choice if it is a good thing i would stay but if it is a bad thing, i will also stay if that is how i would die let it be then i decided that I will go stay with him to be bound to him so immediately i agreed to go all those fears disappeared all the things that i used to see the feelings seeing his presence here and there i stopped seeing him and stopped hearing footsteps it felt like something came out of my body like a load left me and I had peace.”
