Vet doctor ends it all after rich clients refused to pay for their Pet care

A grieving mother, Tina Ellis, is mourning the tragic loss of her 35-year-old son, John Ellis, a veterinarian who took his own life after struggling with emotional distress in his profession.  

According to The Mail, Tina revealed that John found it deeply upsetting when animals he treated couldn’t be saved and also when wealthy clients refused to pay for their pets’ treatments, despite showing up in expensive cars.

The tragedy unfolded on November 6, 2022. John, in a distressed state, reportedly tricked a nurse into giving him a lethal dose of euthanasia drugs, claiming it was for a friend’s large dog. He later used the drug on himself. Before his death, he told his partner of 12 years, Ashley James, that he was going to pick up a package from his former workplace. Later, he called James to confess he had done “something stupid” and expressed his love. 

Later at the scene, Police found John unresponsive in a bathroom and rushed him to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of November 7.  

Tina shared that her son had always hidden his distress, as he was used to staying calm under pressure. John had worked as a vet for 17 years and dreamed of earning a good income while helping animals.

Mrs Ellis said her son once said: “When I’ve got somebody saying they won’t pay to help their animal, and they’re sitting there with a brand-new car outside, and other people who were really struggling financially would do anything to save their animals, but there was nothing they could do because it was already too late.” 

She added: “People get the wrong idea of vets……..The higher-earning ones have been in the profession longer but started on low wage.

“John wanted to earn a good wage, but he’d worked 17 years to get where he was. Vets come in for a lot of bashing. They try really hard to save whatever pets get brought in.”

“It’s an absolute travesty that he’s been lost not only for us but for the veterinary world. He was so good at what he did. He was fun, he was funny, he was generous, he was kind. He was so clever, and we were so proud of him.

“What has come out is how supportive John was to so many different people. He was really encouraging to his younger brother and sister in their careers. He was an amazing brother to them. John would try to spend his own time with nurses in the practice and other young colleagues, trying to give them the confidence to succeed.

Paying tribute to john, his family said: “”He poured his heart into his work, and his absence leaves a deep void in the lives of all who had the privilege of working with him and knowing him personally. As a family, we are devastated by the loss of John, and we continue to grapple with the heartbreak and shock that come with the death of someone so young and full of potential…

“We want to take this opportunity to encourage anyone who may be struggling with mental health challenges to seek support and not suffer in silence. No one should feel that they are alone, and we urge everyone to reach out for help if they are in need.”
