A Tanzanian woman named Harrissa Mukelebe recently opened up about the challenges she’s faced due to her facial hair.
In an interview, Harrissa shared that her beard has brought her hardships, including the loss of her husband, with whom she has a child.
Initially, she would shave her beard out of shame, feeling immense pressure from family, school, and society.
However, over time, Harrissa learned to embrace her facial hair, finding strength in self-acceptance.
She noted that during this times, she was so ashamed and had always think of ending her life because of the bully was too much for her to handle.
She narrated: “I was born like any other kids attending a local school in Muleba but when i turned 19 something happened that would change my life forever one morning i woke up and found 3 small hairs on my chin at first i thought it was normal I just cut them off thinking nothing of it since some of my females, family members had a few stray hairs and i didn’t take it seriously.
“A Few weeks later, the hairs came back this time it wasnt just three but many, I cut them off again but it became obvious to everyone that soemthing was happening with my chin I struggled so much, i tried hiding it with books pulling up my sweater collars doing everything i could to cover it but it just kept growing eventually there was too much to hide I had to drop out of school, i kept cutting the beard but the bully was too much to handle I thought leaving school would give me peace of mind but i was wrong but outside of school the bully even became worse people who had been jealous of my looks started whispering behind my back I knew i couldn’t keep living like this for months i played this painful game waiting for the beards to grow rushing to the barber, cutting it, hiding again it was exhausting and it made me hate my life.
“One day i looked at myself in the mirror, this time i had not cut my beards for a month I just wanted to see how far it would grow if i left it alone as i stood there, i didn’t think about the bullies or the pain it was just me facing myself and in that mirror I saw yet i was still beautiful yes i was different but i looked so beautiful I realized Im unique and i dont need to be afraid I won’t let fear control me anymore no more hiding, no more shame, I’m letting it be
How she felt when people did not accept her she said: “I thought accepting myself was hard but getting others to accept me a woman with a beard that was almost impossible my parents started pressuring me saying my beards brought shame to the family and I was making people gossip about us they didnt know how long it had taken for me to accept myself I ignored them, i decided to go in no more shaving but i was surprised it was only the beginning and the beards kept growing.
How she got married, she said: “Yes i met a handsome man, we met when i was out one day and at that time, i had no friends not a single one, i was facing life alone carrying this burden all by myself but this man came along, he looked me in the eyes and loved me for who i am he accepted me, beards and all for the first time i felt love for the first time I had hope, i knew then that i wasn’t wrong about myself i was still beautiful, it was just a matter of others getting used to my uniqueness so i said yes, i married him and we had a beautiful baby together people didn’t think i could have a child they thought i was somehow different but we proved them wrong and i proved to all those people who doubted me that I’m just as much as a woman as anyone else.
“After we had our child, he decided to leave me he left me and our baby just like that, I don’t know if my beards had become too much for him or if the bullying got to him one morning he wokr up and packed all his things looking sad and lost in thought and then left he didnt tell me why i just wanted to know what went wrong but he left without a word now im left raising my child alone
Does she haves plans cutting her beards if she wants to remarry, she said: ” If a man wants to marry me and ask me to cut my beards, he better leave me alone I love my beards that much, i used to be ashamed of it cutting it everyday but now never again, i don’t even dream of cutting it.

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that formally implements Islamic criminal law, which includes regulations covering relationships and sexual conduct.

According to him, the woman had left her home because of alleged physical abuse from her husband and was later traced and forced to return to him.

The narrator said the woman’s shop was reportedly robbed, with the thieves making away with wigs and weavons said to be worth millions of naira.
