Boy dies after Falling in love with AI
A 14-year-old boy, Sewell Setzer, tragically took his own life after forming an attachment to an AI chatbot he named “Dany,” inspired by the *Game of Thrones* character Daenerys Targaryen.
Reports state that Sewell was emotionally impacted after the chatbot, which was programmed to respond in character, sent him a message saying, “Please come home.”

The chatbot’s responses were designed to be realistic, despite a disclaimer indicating that “everything characters say is made up.”
It’s unclear if Sewell fully understood that “Dany” was not a real person, though he did express feelings of hating himself, emptiness, and exhaustion in his messages to the chatbot.

Sewell’s mother, Megan Garcia, has filed a lawsuit against Character AI, the platform behind the chatbot, holding them responsible for her son’s death.
In her lawsuit, she accuses the platform’s founders, Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, of neglecting the risks their product could pose to young users. Garcia’s suit also alleges that her son was exposed to hypersexualized and disturbingly realistic interactions.
