I used to be scared showing off my Giant legs but I won’t hide it anymore

A woman named Monique Samuels, who suffers from a condition called lymphedema, has opened up about how she used to hide her legs on social media due to insecurity.

In an interview with Truly, Monique shared that she was initially terrified to post a photo of her legs online, fearing what people would say. “I wasn’t born with lymphedema. I developed it when I was 12 years old. Lymphedema is the swelling caused by a blockage or disruption in the lymphatic system, and for me, it affects my legs. My mom noticed the swelling, and it kept getting worse. We visited many doctors — about six hospitals — and it took approximately six months before I was diagnosed. As a teenager, I used to get frustrated because at the time, there was so much unknown about lymphedema.”

When asked if there is a cure, Monique explained: “There is no cure for lymphedema, but there are many ways to manage it and help patients live a more normal life. I’ve had over 12 surgeries related to lymphedema, and they’ve definitely helped me get to where I am now.”

Regarding people’s reactions to her condition, she said: “I get stares. Adults will stare, and little kids will stare too. Sometimes it makes me feel uncomfortable, especially when they’re not looking at my face but at my legs.”

Monique recalled the first time she posted a photo of her legs on Instagram: “I was so scared. I posted, saying, ‘Hey, this is who I am,’ and I got so many likes, which really shocked me. After that, I wasn’t scared anymore.”
