Dr. Shawn Frehner, a Nevada-based veterinarian, has tragically died by suicide following public backlash over a viral video showing him kicking and beating a horse.

His body was discovered at Lake Mead on April 18, just two weeks after he was reported missing on April 6.

According to KTNV, the Clark County Coroner and Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Frehner died from drowning, with pentobarbital—a drug commonly used for animal euthanasia—as a contributing factor.

The incident that led to his disappearance and eventual death stemmed from a disturbing video shared by Shawna Gonzalez, the horse’s owner. The footage, which quickly went viral, captured the moment Frehner was seen aggressively handling the horse, sparking widespread outrage.

Gonzalez recalled the incident on Facebook, expressing deep concern over the vet’s behavior, which led to felony animal abuse charges being filed against Frehner.

Narrating the ordeal, she said: “I heard my mother yell, “Oh my God. He just kicked him.

“He wrapped the horse around his neck three times, and he kicked him in the head.

“I had started having a severe anxiety attack and couldn’t breathe myself.

“I was already on the ground, and my daughter picked up the phone and hit record, and that’s when she got him on videotape, kicking him.

Shortly after the incident, she said: “The abuse and cruelty my horse suffered on 4/3/2025 was inhumane, disgusting, appalling, and the most hurtful thing and from the hands of vet that I trusted and Red trusted”

Before his death, Frehner released a statement in which he apologized for his actions, while also claiming that the video did not show the full story.

He wrote: “I did not blatantly haul off and kick this horse as it appears in the video. That was not my intention at all,’

“It was done simply to get the horse in a better position so that he could breathe and get up and move so I could again try to anesthetize.

“But yes I did kick him right in the chin and I very much do apologize and wish this never happened.
