I kept going and I passed- Nigerian lady celebrates as she becomes a Barrister in UK (Photos)

Don’t bother trying to become a barrister in the UK. The stats are against you, it’s harder for black people, and transferring from Irish Law will prolong your journey”, I was told.   

If I had listened to the above advice, I wouldn’t be here to testify that today I became a barrister.   

1. I moved to the UK (on my own) to pursue the Bar. A pathway not many willingly take.   

2. I didn’t have any legal connections, I didn’t know anyone. 

3. I didn’t come from a wealthy background. 

4. I didn’t have a British accent, and was told that my Southern Irish accent did me no favours. Thankfully I ignored this comment.   

5. I didn’t allow a failed exam define me. I kept going, and I passed. 

6. I kept going even when no one in the room looked like me.   

7. I even kept going, despite having Covid during one of my Bar exams. (disclaimer: it was a remote exam and nobody was hurt except the tissues!). 

I am a living testimony that what seems impossible, is possible with faith, hardwork & consistency – so please keep going.
